Another CV thread

    Hi, I've read all the stickies and a few threads about CV's and I still have a bit of a problem over my cv.

    A couple of things:

    The trend on here i see is to go:

    * personal details
    * skills
    * work experience [possibly swap around work experience/skills ala wwman's cv template]
    * education
    * hobbies/interests

    Mine will definately be 2 pages long. So now I've two versions of the cv:

    Number one uses the above layout, and the other uses the more traditional layout of:

    * personal details
    * education
    * skills
    * hobbies/interests
    * work experience [possibly swap around work experience/skills]

    Now I've cut out the crap, my hobbies/experience etc. is very short, i've cut out irrelevant jobs... things like that.

    The thing i'm not sure about is the education. The fact that I just got a first class honours degree i think is important, so i feel that should be right bang on the first page...but i do not want 'completed the leaving cert in 1999' cluttering everything up. - with layout #1 it just launches straight into skills/work experience without mention of relevant qualifications gained. It just seems counter-intuitive to me, especially considering the jobs i'm looking at say 'BA/BsC or relevant degree required' a lot of the time.

    My dad's suggestion was to just throw in a 'major award' section right under personal details and throw it in there, and then keep the rest of the education [subjects studied for degree/diploma, the fact that i did do the leaving cert etc.] on the 2nd page. - Just seems a little messy to me.

    Part of me says it's not really that important, though i know full well how quickly recruiters 'scan' cv's. What do people think?

    why dont you tailor your cv for each position you go for, highlighting, or at least leaving in, any of the details you feel are relavant to the position

    there is no right cv, but there are a lot of wrong ones.

    just make sure its got the info you want them to have (or even better, they want), its neat and the presentation is good.

    by the way, be very careful about what you cut out. what you think is not interesting, may be exactly what the interviewer is looking for...

    there is also no law that says your cv cant be over two pages.
    then again, maybe your layout is just crap and you have too much useless info where you could be savinf space.

    cv's are very personal :)
