i took the leap yesterday and spent a lot of money on my frist trip down the pci-x lane .......i bought myself a asus p5ad2 deluxe motherboard ..........its the 925x chipset which will take over from the 875 that we all use now .....it cost me nearly 300 euro "i know that was a hell of a lot to pay from something that wont show any real benift for at least 6 month and by then the prices will have well droped down" ........

ive gone as far as i can go with playing around with 478 socket boards ..........so i said what the hell  ....now to the reason im writing this post ...i dont have or use credit cards ...i do have a paypal account but no way to but money into it ....i thought they had allowed us here in ireland to add funds through our banks ...but when i read more i found all they had changed was that they are now allowing us the withdraw money only which is a bit thick ..
Now then what im looking for is does anybody out there know where i can track down some PCI-X componets cheap ...i.e... 3.4ghz 775 socket or higher ......also some ddr2 533 or higher ....and a nvidea 6800 ultra pci-x ......if anyone knows anywhere that does wire transfer or western union or any shops in ireland or anyone out there who would be willing to meet up with me in an internet cafe and put a couple of ton into my paypal account and when i see its in my account then ill pay you the money in cash there and then and a small fee ..

any help would be great thanks

    FYI: Its PCI-E, not x. There's a big difference.

You can send a money order to Jes.

Can you eleborate on that ciaran500 I up till recently thought the same.

You can buy of jes and just trasfer the money into their account.

Done it myself not to long ago

"Other companies extended PCI in a different direction to create PCI-X, which is now widely supported in servers and workstations such as the Celsius V. PCI-X is currently the only expansion interface that can deliver full performance for high-performance networking and storage cards, but it isn't available on most desktop PCs.

This summer you'll have another choice: PCI Express, or PCI-E for short. Though software-compatible with PCI and PCI-X, PCI Express is very different on a physical level. Instead of the 32-bit or 64-bit parallel interfaces of PCI and PCI-X, PCI-E uses one or more ultra-fast serial channels. Faster cards, like 3D graphics adapters, use more channels."

Aye Jes are a great company and you don't need a credit card. I've ordered most of my parts from there. They are one of the cheapest in Europe that deliver.

    3.4 775
    http://www.jes-computer.de/product_info.php?pID=17482

The 3.6's aren't in stock but they cost a good bit more. You know yourself dub, just overclock.

Unfortunatly they don't have any high end pci-e cards in stock but I think you found another site for that anyway.

I don't see any ddr2 anywhere but there is no point using ddr2 unless your getting a 3.73 prescott with 1066mhz fsb stock.

ddr1 modules are pretty fast atm. Does that mobo only support ddr2?

this is the board that i got
    http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P5AD2%20Deluxe&langs=01

this mobo only supports ddr2 i found some here ...but its not cheap
    http://64.4.18.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=EN&lah=809010d43cdff922d430722f14087743&lat=1094423856&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2epc%2dmemory%2dupgrade%2eco%2euk%2fmemory%2fddr2%2d533%2easp
im going to go for 2 sticks of 256mb till i get something a bit better

and elara have the p4.3.4 for Total Incl VAT: €332.29 after doing the maths JES would only be 4 euro cheaper after tax and delivery so ill get it in elara at least ill get it there and then

now its deciding on the pci-e graphics card its a toss up between 6800 ultra or the x800xt this is where it gets hard to track down somewhere to buy without credit card and still get it cheap compared to the 699 peats is charging for the ultra ...i seen it direct have the ulta for 499 and its the asus retail pack but its agp :(

PCI-E (Express) is very previous at present, hopefully you dont end up beta testing in effect. Does that Board have any legacy PCI slots by the way ?

I have my beady eyes on it as an early 2005 possibility

I think you're mad buying a PCI-E rig right now. You would be better off wating for the 1066FSB and then buy all the latest hardware. New graphics cards will be out then with 512MB of memory and 4GHz CPU etc, did you not read that Intel are gonna be doing Prescott chips with standard 2MB L2 cache?

And they will be as cheap as current chips. DDR2 800 is also due.

Firewire 800 is a joke, because it's tied to the PCI bus which runs at 133MB's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

DDR2 800 won't be out for another year at least and won't be useful until the system fsb's get a lot higher than 1066, even to overclockers.

PCI-E stuff isnt even expensive right now. Surely better buy early PCI-E than "obsolete" PCI/AGP isnt it?

    LOL....obsolete PCI/AGP??

Have you not read that PCI-E offers NO real world difference in speed and performance being compared to their current AGP counterparts?

PCI-E offers no boost in frame rates or system performance, even the 925x chipset is no better then 875P. Many reviews say the same...they perform almost identical.

The next big move is the new Prescott chips with standard 2MB L2 cache + 1066FSB. And they should be due end of year or early 2005. Save your money Dubdvd, don't be a slave to the upgrade!

I'd agree with waiting for the 2mb Prescott's on 1066mhz fsb. I'm thinking of this as well if the benchmarks look good.

You already have a **** hot system dub.

Notice the " " around "obsolete".
Real world performance is irrelevant. The PC platform is switching to PCI-E, end of story.

Yes I have read about the lack of exciting PCI-E performance, much like DDR2 and virtually all new technology:

When AGP 4x was introduced people said it was no faster than AGP2x.
When AGP was introduced, it actually served no pupose at all, the available AGP cards were slower than their PCI brethren
When PCI was introduced, people said ISA was fine.
    Etc etc etc.

Just because the real world doesnt match up to big business plans doesnt mean big business is "wrong" anymore than it means you can do anything about it. PCI and AGP are dead as their successor already is in the market and has almost unanimous backing. Doesnt mean buying AGP/PCI now is a bad thing (of bought 2 boards), but it certainly means buying PCI-E is far from a waste, its actually quite logical. Lets see you try and mash a PCI-E gfx card into that AGP slot next year...

The question is, does it make sense to dump such a high end machine like Dubdvd has at this point?

I would say no, unless he feels the value of his components in his current machine will drop dramatically in the coming months to a point where he'll lose too much money by not selling now.

From a technical standpoint he won't see any performance increase over the machine he has now, it's likely we will see revisions of the PCI-E specifications, such as we have seen with AGP.

Thus buying now could mean a new revsion of PCI-E 2 in 6 months or a year. We all know PCI-E is the here to stay and AGP will be dead in the next 18 months, the question is does it make sense to upgrade right now?

Being so close to the new 1066FSB and the new wireless capabilities built into the new Intel chipsets. I would say wait until the start of the new year, then go ahead.

That's what i am doing, i can't afford to upgrade every 2 months anymore....gotta play it SMART.
