    Hi all,

I need to get 20 PC's over the next few weeks, €400 each is the budget. Does anyone know where I could get them, I dont need monitors, Just a bog standard with XP home.
I was looking at Dell but they all include monitors, I'll ring them on Monday.

    Thanks for the replys. JoePC

Don't know of any 'household names' but a google search for "Cheap PC UK" bring up loads in that price range, including http://www.pentathlondirect.co.uk/ (for example).

If you ring jaguar, marx computers, komplett, etc and give them a similar spec, they might cut you a deal.

You probably know all this anyway. Personally I'd avoid dell - if you have 20 pc's to look after, and know what you are doing, you can use standard parts for spares. Dell will probably give you a crappy Celeron machine with small hard disks, but might give you a good price.

anyway ring around and let us know how you get on.

Elara and Jaguar sell cheap pcs for under 400 , both on main page of eachs website.

I would buy off Elara(016251320), just ask for Dave O Hara and he will sort you out.
I buy all my gear off them and I find them fantastic.Their after sales service is spot on and also they courier out my orders fast.
There budget system is €398 inc vat and the spec is excellent.
The company I work for is using a good few of these and none have given trouble.

If you ring dell and explain you are buying 20 they will bend over backwards. You don't have to buy monitors from them.

Also, make sure you get through to business sales - they're set up for this kind of order and have more leeway on pricing than the home sales people.

It think dell have a pc for just over 330 (i think, less than 400 anyway), no monitor. Seen it in their business leaflet at work the other day.

If you buy them off dell, you'll get a warranty, software (OS and OFFICE) and support covered. Personally the hassle of putting them together yourself its not worth because you'll save nothing and just have lots of hassle and work. What about office software? Sometimes if you need the software then Dell is cheaper. As for Dell parts not being standard, theres very few things on Dells that will fail and you'll have a warranty anyway so who cares. The majority of the parts in a Dell are standard.

the hard drive, chip, RAM and AGP GFX card are standard.

    Non-standard mobo, case and PSU

Actually the PSU is an ATX but the connector is wired slightly differently. Case and motherboard are different but the case won't fail, and motherboard failures are rare. In fact whats most likely to fail is the onboard NIC and thats easily replaced.

I'm currently working on a project where so far we've installed about 400 Dell PC's and about 100 Dell Laptops. No failures so far. In one of my old jobs we had about 1000 Dell PCs and failures were very rare. I'd say in 5 years we say 2 PSU's and about 5 motherboards, and then on old machines which were were being moved around a lot and severely abused.

Where as in another job we had custom built PC's and we were forever swapping out components as bits failed. Even at home I've seen more failures on my home equipment than I ever did at work with Dell gear. But then I was always messing about with them.

But hey, go with what you know. I'd say the software licence cost will be as much a deciding factor as upgrades and replacement of components. Generally in a work enviroment machines are very rarely upgraded. At the moment I'm pulling replacing PC's and Laptops that are anywhere from 5 to 8 years in constant use. With some of them running with out a reboot for months at a time.

Actually you're right. In that situation Dell is great, where you can get good deals, and don't have to worry about it anymore.

If you were building machines for gaming, for yourself or a mate I'd build it yourself. Or if you already had an OS and Applications then Dell would be less attractive.

Exactly. I reckon you can get 20 without monitor, but with xp home for about €199 + VAT and delivery each

Not a chance anyone will beat that
