iRiver iHP question

I'm looking to buy an iRiver iHP, but i've hit a problem. The iriver comes in 2 colours, black and silver, and the black just doesn't look good in my opinion. I'm looking to buy a 40 gb one, but the only ones i've seen are black ones, whereas there seems to be an abundance of silver 20gb ones. Does anybody know where i can find a silver 40gb iRiver?

    You could try these guys...

    http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/index.php

I got a silver 20gig of them awhile ago, very good site, or you could try ordering directly from the IRiver site ??

Their US page is better for that kinda stuff i think...

As far as I'm aware, the 20 comes only in silver, and the 40 only in black? I may be wrong, but I dont think I've ever seen a black 20 or a silver 40.

I am the proud owner of a black 40gb model and just to confirm, this is the only colour available. :)

No the 20 and 10s both come in silver or black. Thats why i was optimistic of the existence of a silver 40.

You could try posting over on the iRiver boards.

Maybe someone there will have more info...

Course if you're that interested in how it looks and not what it does, you should get an iPod...they look sooo much better :D

    *dons flameproof vest*

(Obviously I own an iRiver m'lself)

Trying to decide between a 40gig pod and hp140 at the moment myself. Leaning towards the pod tbh :(

the iriver has the radio. that was the selling point for me...i like the idea of the walk to work and getting the news....(yes yes yes, i realise i can get the news on t'interwebulator as well, but i loikes the voices y'see)

from what i read, the ipod does the whole listing choons and generating playlists etc a lot better. dunno is that an ITunes thing or what, but I was reading in WORD magazine (which surely is on a kicker from Apple!) that it'll, for instance, keep tally of how often you play certain tracks and then you can tell it to play the 'least favourites'. (I'm glad my Iriver hasn't such an option. There's a good f***ing reason I skip Revolution 9 on the beatles White album...:D )

Also, apparantly, you could do such things as just generate on the fly lists to play all everything with the genre tag 'ambient-jazz-fusion-metal'

All told, my 2c would be go the Iriver. You mightn't get the bells'n'whistles of the Pod and the 'River ain't no design classic, but face it - you'll prolly put the player in yer jacket pocket as you don't want it nicked anyway...oh - and the Irivers cheaper, innit

Well i have no experience with the ipod but iv had an iRiver for almost a year now and im VERY happy with it...As for looks ect.. well it spends most of its time in its leather case or in my backpack traveling around.

The remote gets over used :D but lucky that the iRiver has a great remote also..

Like i said everyone will have their fav but this iRiver owner is more then happy with his lil jukebox............

The iRiver player is technically superior and cheaper than the latest comperable iPod, but iTunes would be a big factor for me. JRiver is the recommeded alternative for other players, but I downloaded the demp to have a look and it crashes regularly whereas iTunes hasn't given me a problem in weeks. The protruding controls on the iRiver put me off, but the main reason for favouring the pod is the fact that I've never heard any complaints about them other than battery life.

Don't suppose anyone here has both and would care to pick their favourite? ;)

The US 20GB is black the EU 20GB is silver, not sure about the 40GBs. Go for the iRiver before the iPod, I have used both and the iRiver beats it hands down. The new H series Irivers are disgusting looking

You sort of undermine yourself there by saying 'the only downside of the pod is the battery life'...I mean, that's a big feckin' downside!!! :D

Mixie - it'll boil down to what you want from your player, and how you use it. I own shedloads of cds, and i now have a portable doo-dah that will allow me, at the drop of a hat flick from the Lightning Seeds via Ben Folds Five to Prince, not forgetting to drop in on any of the other 3000 tunes i've currently managed to load onto it (23G free still btw!)

Your Ipod will do more or less the same thing. You'll pay more but you'll probably look cool(er). The song management software is probably sexier as well. TBH, Winamp style m3u lists are enough for me, I don't have access to broadband at home so the whole 'downloading music' vibe ain't an option for me.

As for the stickyout controller - well, as somebody else said, you keep it in the cover, and that's prolly kept in something 'safe' as well so that's not really an issue. I've had me player for 2 weeks now and while i'm still more at the filling it rather than listening to it stage, I'm happy out with it...

After ripping a bunch of my CDs, I have 60 odd gigs of mp3s. There's still more to go too, so the music management software is a big plus for me. You're right though about the battery, of course.

I really just want someone who has either player to give out about something, the owners of each seem to find few faults.

Where did you get your iRiver from out of curiousity?

From looking through the iRiver forums there are 3 big annoyances with the ihp140 it seems

    - lack of gapless playback, annoying when you're playing live shows or mix CDs.
    - lack of on-the-fly playlist generation
    - firmware upgrades not delivered when promised by iRiver.

I'd done a whole lot of research before I picked mine up and the above didn't bother me too much so i ordered mine from www.mx2.co.uk, £249 including free delivery which took 2 days. Couldn't be happier with it.

Isn't 'gapless' playback pretty much impossible accross the board?

I meant to ask this actually and never got around to it, but....y'know, I rip my 2manyDJs CD and as you say, you get gaps. Im' told that it's the very nature of mp3 ripping - that even if the CD sounds 'seamless' that as long as there are individual 'tracks' on a disc, then they'll be ripped as such and alas you get the delay...
Even on Winamp (running without many plugins, i admit) and I play a set of songs that are together, you get a gap...

Now - if there was a way to rip a CD as one long track, we'd be halfway to a solution although obv you couldn't flick thru individual tracks you don't like.

Re: the 'on the fly list generation'...quite right - the Iriver doesn't support it, but tell the truth....how many times have you been stuck waitnig for a bus and instead of wanting to listen to music, you think 'D'you know what...I'd LOVE to generate a playlist'...

failure to deliver firmware...aye - newest version came out last week. biggest crib among the iriver faithful was the lack of 'on the fly' lists. You can see para above for me thoughts on *that*

I'd really appreciate thoughts on the 'gaps in playback' regarding mp3s in general...

I upgraded to firmware 1.60 the other night, it seems fine but the only feature I was interested in was being able to delete files via the main unit. Handy for when I'm recording via the mic and not near a PC.

It seems Exact Audio Copy can copy an entire album to one MP3, using the "copy range" feature. As you mentioned, it's not possible to skip tracks that way though.

As for the gapless playback issue, I think there are plugins for winamp that will get rid of the gaps between mixcds ripped to MP3 although I've never used them myself. I don't think any portable MP3 player supports gapless playback.

With regards to the IHP140 specifically, I really don't know enough about the hardware or software that powers it but when I bought mine I joined a discussion group and here are quotes from a few people posted over the last few days:

"[gapless playback] Maybe not possible with MP3 but its definitely possible with OGG since the H140 decodes OGG entirely in CPU and OGG supports gapless natively unlike MP3."

"True Gapless playback is something that probably will never be acheived because it has to do with modifying the playback of the MP3 itself."

If it's not possible I'm not sure why it's become such a big issue in the iRiver community.

    they're bored...

    :D

also - and like yerself i've hopped onto one or two iriver forums meself...there's a certain amount of humourless Ipod/Iriver spats going on so you have people seemingly masquerading as iriver owners complaining about their 'own' hardware and vowing to buy an ipod next time.

Jesus christ, can you all shut the **** up?

I wanted to know about a silver 40 gb iRiver. If you want to help me on this particular subject then go ahead. Now if you want to ramble on about how the iRiver is better than the iPod or whatever issues you've had with it, then START YOUR OWN ****ING THREAD! I could care less about that stuff, i decided months ago that the iRiver was better than the iPod, which is why i decided to buy one, and my friends detailed long ago its pros and cons, so really if i'd wanted to hear it, i would have asked about it.

Stay on topic or don't post, its that simple.

If you think my popularity on a web board is whats important to me, then theres something wrong with you.

And i don't see whats wrong with what i said. Just because people can't stick to a topic its not my fault.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,884 ✭✭✭grumpytrousers

Both Mixie and Carsby answered your question 2 days ago with what seemed to be an emphatic '40Gb - black'.

I can't speak for others on the thread, but for myself, I'll take 'Keep this on thread' requests from Mods and the like, not you...

    Cheers

    gt

I'm almost certain from what i've seen on the internet that theres 40 gig silver ones, so i'm holding out hope that somebody might know a reliable site.

And if you don't like the way that i'm running MY thread, then nobody asked you to post in it. If the question really was answered a while ago, then it should be discussion closed. I don't want to have to come back and trawl through a bunch of people who are trying to show off how much they know even though it has nothing to do with the topic.

I'm in the market for a new MP3 player after my lovely Zen NX was nicked from my mate's car and am leaning towards a 40gb iHp. But can someone tell me if there's a facility to play a random track from your music library? I loved the shuffle feature from the NX that would just play through your entire collection randomly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 680 ✭✭✭Amaru

I'm sure they exist, i just don't know a reliable site to buy one from. Which was the point of the topic. The only ones i've seen have been what look like russian sites.

And i like how these boards work just fine. What i don't like is when people post stuff that has nothing to do with what i want to know, and i have to waste my time reading through it.

Assuming I've permission to answer this question as it doesn't specifically relate to the availability of Silver 40Gb Irivers...:D you can do that random thing.

It seems to number each track, whether you have it in an artist directory or at root...and just seems to go thru 'em at random...

    I say 'seem'...as I've not analysed this...

In fact, I'm currently playing the ithingy do run down the battery and give it a good full charge up this pm...

Mother of God, for the last time - THERE IS NO SILVER IHP-140!

    p.s. unless someone modified a silver IHP-120 and added a 40gb HD.
