OK, advice on a new build for a non-technical type who doesn't want to ever have to do any work on it once it's up, (budget to 1600)

    775 vs. 939 ? - current 775 mobos won't support higher FSBs due to emerge, while 939's don't have PCI-x?

SATA vs PATA - he is not going to want to have to make boot disks or have the hassle of no built - in driver support if something goes wrong. PATA / Raptor for now?

DDR2 vs DDR - Any point in going for DDR2 until higher FSB mobos are out?

the 939 option is very dear IMO, id go 775 look here

afraid i dunno what pata is, i always hear good things about the SATA interface though

as far as DDR2 is concerned read this it seems nice but pricey too

may i ask what the pc is gonna be used for that will influence things

There is no poing getting ddr2 until the 1066mhz fsb Prescotts are out in Q4.

Even with overclocking you would be hard pushed to max the speed of high end ddr2. Stick with ddr for now unless you plan on getting one of the 3.73 prescotts which on a budget of 1600 I doubt.

What's the system for? Will he need a good graphics card?

SATA is the way to go. Raptors are seriously overpriced. You would be much better off with 2 sata drives raided.

You should even consider S478 as it's nice and cheap to get a high end s478 system now.
