Blue screen memory dump when ripping cd's

I just bought a new NEC ND-3500AG DVD writer.. It works great at burning cd's and dvd's but when i try to rip and audio cd i sometimes (alot of the time) get a blue screen. By trying the same cd again i can eventually get it ripped. I forgot to bring the actual screen output into the labs with me but the error message complains about win32.sys in particular. This used never happen before i got the burner. I'll give a more detailed error message tomorrow.

    System Spec
    AMD Athlon 2000+
    Crucial 256mb 266
    Gigabyte GA-7DXR+
    Maxtor 40gb hard drive
    SBLive 5.1 sound card

    Windows XP Service Pack 2

PS. This is not a PSU issue.. I have tried two PSU's with this and i get the same problem with both.

Edit: I have no problem either reading DVD's that have been burned etc.

What are you using to rip the discs?

Do you have an ASPI layer installed?

Sorry, that was an obvious omission..

I'm using cdex, however even when i play an audio cd in windows media player i can have the same problem. AFAIK i'm using the default which i believe is ASPI but i'll have to confirm this.

ok.. haven't had internet access for a few days now.. but here we go.. the blue screen error i get is

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown
to prevent damage to your computer

    ........

    *** Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF801C88, 0xF684BC48, 0x00000000

    *** win32k.sys - Address BF801C88 Base At BF800000, Datestamp 41107F79"

Note though that it iw win32k.sys that is giving the problem and not win32.sys as I said earlier.. I'm going to to a search in google also. If anyone can make any sense of these message please help.

Edit: The library cdex is using is the native nt scsi library

while i admit i have no idea what would be the cause of this problem, am i correct in saying that the only problem you have is ripping, everything else works OK? If so, would you consider working around the problem instead of fixing it? Then i suggest you download iTunes, i use it for all my ripping, free to download here:

    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

if you had the same problem with this then you know the problem is not specific to the software you are currently using. if it works, then hey no problem. It is apples equivalent of Windows Media Player, & it rips into MP3 & AAC format (and a few others i dont remember).

Wouldn't be a big fan of itunes i'm afraid.. infact i hate it with a passion. But anyhow AFAIK my problem is driver related (few searches of google). It's not only cdex that gives me this problem, windows media player causes it too while i play back cd's. However this morning I had my first crash while burning a cd. I got a similar message as above but this time it ranted about "memory access... above or below" which was an error i have seen printed on forums that i searched with the original error message. I'm thinking a format and install is the easiest way of going bout doing it. I'm going to have another few searches through google first though.. Thanks for your help though.
