Setanta has arrived on Chorus Digital, but it tells me its not in my subscription.

Anyone know how much it will cost?

12.99 a month waste of money why pay for a channel that only has the occasional premiership match and only operates at weekends. when ya can get skyports for 20 euro with over 400 live games..

Yah like the Celtic League, SPL, and some stupid cross border league of Ireland Cup.

    12.99 a month for a blank screen 5 days a week.

They did show some other group matches, but honestly its worth no more than 5 a month, and how can they expect us to pay for it when NTL customers get it for free.

What do we get off Sky.
    Live Premiership
    Live Fa Cup
Live internationals of the Countries we want to see.
    Live Heineken Cup
    Live English Premiership Rugby
    Live Tri Nations Rugby
    Live Tennis
    Live Cricket
    Live Snooker
    And Plenty more....

12.99 makes Sky look excellent value.

Remember Setanta don't get all of the 30 Premiership games to be beamed into Irish Homes.
    RTE get 15 of them.

yep and when rte start showing the premiership matches live from this saturday with bolton versus Man utd at 3pm setanta looks like less and less value. It should have been a bonus channel on chorus like on ntl how can they possibly justify 12.99 a month..

I'm really enjoying having it on ntl & I've seen a good bit of stuff on it, but I don't think there's any way I'd pay €12.99 per month for it. After all it's only on 2 days per week. Maybe when it goes to full weekly broadcasts in January it might.

Can anyone figure out why NTL decided to make it availible free to all on analogue when surely it would have made good sense to restrict it to Go Digital and then use it as a "hook" to boost subscriptions.

Why not? There's loads of channels in your Sky Digital sub that aren't available on NTL. PAnyway I believe it will be 7 days next year.

I don't think the channel would survive given that NTL have only 70,000 digital households. Analogue and digital gives you access to 340,000 homes.

Yeah, there's no way Setanta would have done the deal with ntl if it was only made available to the digital package only. This way Setanta can be seen on ntl's large analogue network (Dublin in particular).

The reason it is free for NTL is because they removed nickoldeon from their channel line up to fit it into their basic channel line up - this brought over 300,000 customers to setanta, chorus on the other hand did not want to take off a channel that was very popular to fit it in - as with sky - so setanta charged it as a premium channel as both companies we're not bringing as many customers to the table as ntl - but ntl have lots over 15,000 customers since it's launch because of the lose of Nickoldeon - so for the sake of charging the monthly rate to subs that really wanted the channel - they left noone with a choice on the matter!!

Would you mind telling me where your getting any of this information or figures from?

Nickelodeon was not removed form ntl's analogue package, it was merely moved to another frequency (264Mhz) (it is still available).

    The FACT's are:
    - Nick was not dropped it was moved.
    - Chorus and $KY had the option (like NTL) to broadcast it free.....but choose to make it subscription.
    - NTL has paid Setanta a considerable sum of money to make it Free. This basically gives them a comparative advantage over the opposition (chorus and $KY).

    It's all business!!!

Now.... Although I would not pay €12.99 for it....YET!!!............
I do see it as a potential alternative (in it's early life) to SKY's dominance in the sports market.
Remember what all consumers want is competition......
It also will focus more on Irish sport (ie Euro Games from Ireland's Group).... Potentially GAA championship action in the future (not saying RTE aren't doing a great job).

I resent jimbob's comments about "some stupid cross border league of Ireland Cup"........ The Setanta cup could be an important step towards a competitive all Ireland League........which will only serve to help soccer in the country..........
I bet jimbob jumped on the Shelbourne band wagon a few weeks ago, when they showed the true potential of League of Ireland Soccer

Sorry for the rant guys...Having a bad day :o

Entirely agree with you, lets hope they can become in someway competitive with Sky Sports, competition can only be good for the consumer. :)

I like the way they've got rights to the other Group 4 qualifiers. Although, I wouldn't like to see the GAA going from RTÉ, (I think they do a great job at it) Setanta could well have more cash behind they when the rights come up for negotiations. (And we all know all the GAA care about is money)

Ditto, I think it's a shame the eircom league gets practically no attention. TV3 have a pityful interest with "eircom league weekly" & the very rare live match. RTÉ appear to have no interset whatsoever. :( I'd like Setanta to possibly bid for a rights package for next season, after all they'll be broadcasting 7 days by the time that starts.

Yes I supported Shels in the champions league.
    why wouldn't I, I'm Irish.
I have also gone to see a few Waterford Utd games in the last year,
but I still think the quality of the football is terrible, and was trying to point out there is no way I would be prepared to fork out 12.99 to see a very limited sports channel, with the practically the worst of whats to offer,
especially when i can see league of Ireland teams for free on Chorus Sports channel and TV3.

On another point it is good to see an Irish Sports Channel, but its just going to end up putting more costs on us.
Say they did get the GAA, Irish Rugby internationals, Irish Football Internationals etc.
Then we would have to get it.

A lot of chorus customers will be disappointed about the €12.99 monthly charge. As far as im concerned sky sports offers more value for money (except if your an ntl subscriber).

I mailed CS in NTL last May, enquiring as to when we might see Xtra. They told me that they were busy negotiating with Sky and hoped to have an announcement in time for the start of this season's Premiership.

No reply to several emails since they launched Setanta. It looks like a transfer request is in order.

All I want it for was the NFL, and of course Harrington winning the golf yesterday.

I believe that Chorus and Sky Dig customers can get Setanta Sports for €99 for the year. The channel is now 7 days and one of eight sports channels operated by Setanta (Rangers TV, Celtic TV, SPL Live, NASN, NASN Germany, Setanta Sports (Ireland), Setanta World of Sports (North America) along with the PPV and the pub network.

Interesting to note that Irish TV viewers spend €300 million per annum on subscription TV. Something that all the sporting organisations are taking note of in their negotiations!

It's been reported on the Soccer forums that Setanta have the contract to show the Dutch, German and French leagues live from next season.

Sky Sports did cover the Bundesliga for a while, and I must say, it went down like a lead balloon. Not what I would call, a "coup" really.

    Interesting alright.

All the money is going towards trash.

I suppose their Super Sunday next year will feature

    NAC Breda v RKC Waalwijk

    Sounds brilliant..................

So, did I. Sky only afforded the Bundesliga lip service really — no matches were shown live. I think any league would suffer if all you could see were highlights of matches in a one-hour format.

Setanta UK are showing a live match this Sunday afternoon, hopefully the Irish version won't leave us waiting til next season for live coverage.
