Canon 300D. I dont know what the entry level Nikon is, D70 or D100?

check out www.ny-camera.com. Dont let the name fool you, theyre based in Germany and priced (very reasonably) in euros

yes, this 22megapixel digital camera is pretty good, not an SLR as such but it's not bad quality:

    or a good SLR is:

what do you want to use it for, what is your budget and then i can give a proper answer

New fuji S3 coming out soon looks set to be sweet but to have any idea of what to reccommend we need,
    1) A budget.
    2) What exactly you intend to do and how much experience you have,
    3) Do you currently have an slr, if so what brand because there is no point in buying a whole new set of accessories tbh, and even if you do having the old ones gives you a far better range of things you can do

Take a look at this selection of SLR Digital Cameras , which is ordered by number of sales, so the top one is the most popular, the Cannon 300D and Nikon D70 mentioned are the top ranking - which is a reasonable guide to what's generally considered good - lots of other people have decided they're what they need. There are also excellent customer reviews of those models via that link.

But don't take too much notice of the prices on that site. Everything is available cheaper elsewhere.

Have a look at www.dpreview.com. All your reviews and forums can be found there.

S7000 is a 6.3mpx with supers CCD so res is up to 12.3mpx... also has full manula so I would class as a Digital SLR as it has every function an SLR has? :)

    Digital SLR Link

Of course it's not an SLR! Try ripping the lens off. A very good camera, no doubt, but not an SLR.

    Hi one-angry-dwarf,

As an owner of the 300D for over a year now I can say that you can't go wrong with it. It is a great camera which results in stunning images and a good handling of colour. The CMOS sensor is very impressive and the A4 print I get from it is excellent. The flexibility in form of manual control is so good sometimes you can be slightly over powered with the amount of option you have.

That said it is very slow starting up and writing to CF (may not be a problem if you don’t do a lot of sport photography or nature when the split second counts) which I found a problem.

If I was buying right now I would look at the Nikon D70 and weight up to the pros and cons of each (keep in mind that the 300D is a lot cheaper and, in fairness, was out 9 months before Nikon even came to the table with the D70).

However I would not dream of buying now as the market is about to go through major changes in the next few weeks. Canon is introducing the replacement for the semi pro 10D, the 20D which is going to retail at around €1500 (based on internet rates not rip off high street prices). This in turn will drop the price of any remaining 10D’s and in so doing so drop the price of the 300D. That said if I had the choice between paying €1000 for a 300D or €1500 for a D20 I’d be selling something to make up the difference and go for the 20D.

All that said you should be very comfortable with SLR photography if you really want to get the full benefit of a digital SLR. If you are about to do a course in photography then you’ll need a 35mm SLR as a prerequisite for most courses so keep that in mind.

I would agree with the others who mentioned checking out DPreview. An excellent site with a great in-depth review on each camera.
