Surge protectors?

I bought a new one today for €30 for my PC, Micromark...looks pretty good and has some ok specs. My question is about the broadband surge protection it offers.

It has RJ11,RJ45,BT input/outputs that enable you to connect your telephone line and have it surge protected etc.

But would i see any benefit from running my phone line through this surge protector?

And would i see a drop in download speeds with broadband?...is it more negative than positive is the question.

    Thanks.

the idea of a surge proctector is to stop spikes in woltage/current.
It should stop modem/motherboard been blown up in event of a lighting storm

3 people in my workplace had equipment damaged by nearby lightning strikes in the last month.
1 lost the motherboard/modem/PSU. Had no surge protection. Covered by household insurance. Has to replace guts of PC and wait on insurance.
1 lost the modem, but as it was an external serial model, that's all that went.
1 lost some sort of fuse in the surge protector for just the modem line. Needs to replace, most likely.

Hadn't seen that for years in an urban-ish area, but it does happen.

as for performance. Can't see it changing much unless you get a bad model.
unless we're going to get really nerdish and start comparing attenuation and reflected signals, which can be viewed on a lot of DSL routers.
