Backing up software?

    Hi,

I'm moving away from home(College) and will be bringing a computer with me. I have some pretty decent development software that I want to install on the computer (Macromedia studio & Vs.Net) howver I don't want to bring the cd's with me for fear of them getting broken or having to keep them safe for a few months.

    So anyways...

I want to make copies of the CD's (Macromedia studio, Visual studio.net, Windows & MSDN library). As far as I know all the microsoft stuff is multi user licensed macromedia is a single licence. I would uninstall it here and just keep it on the computet that I'm bringing. Is it that simple ? Can I just copy the cd's or is there some form of protection? I'd use the same serial key's etc.

Is it possible to copy the full cd to my hard drive without worrying about it not working? This machine I've had to format a good few times. If something were to happen etc. I dont want to ask for home to send the cd's out to me and I certainly don't want to bring htem with me.

    Any suggestions?

Same procedure as backing up games i guess, use ClonyXXL to see what copy protection is on the CDs, then use Alcohol 120% (u need to tell it what copy protection to expect) to image/burn the new CD.

Google ClonyXXL and Alcohol 120% if you dont already use them, to get download links!

Microsoft development stuff (VS.Net 2003 anyway) doesn't rely on CD protection just the key. It would be fairly standard in large organisations for the IT guys to just copy the files on the CD to a network share and let people install from there so CD protection wouldn't be a good idea, I'd guess macromedia is similar

Once again thanks, just about to do it now :)

CD keys certainly aren't an issue :)
