Green Fee Rates in Ireland

I saw a review about green fee rates in Ireland recently and i cannot believe the prices some of the top clubs are charging its disgraceful. I got a free game in the K Club last sunday and it by no means warrants a green fee rate of €265. Actually i have played more challenging and enjoyable courses for less than €40! Would any of ye pay such a high rate for a round of golf?

    What courses Houllio?

What courses would you recommend in the Dublin area for under €50?

Well dublin is fairly dear but you can still find some good courses under €50. I usually head outside the capital to find the bargains. Esker Hills in Co. Offaly is one of the best and most challenging courses you will ever play and can play there for about €30. I played the revamped Nass course recently and thats great value for money. If you have a gui handicap you can play these and other great courses on their open days for less than €20. The new headfort is €55 but we got it for €25 in an open day great value for a superb course, the old Headfort is excellent aswell. Other good courses to play are The European Club, Beech Park, South County, Beaverstown, Donabate, St Margarets, Mount Wolesley.

There are some good ones around. GrangeCastle in Clondalkin is a decent enough course for about €20. Someone else mentioned Corballis which (apart from three mickey mouse holes 13-15) is a fine course.

Sillogue Park in Ballymun (beside the NCT centre) isn't bad either for about €20 also.

I'd recommend Grange Castle and Sillogue too. Both are public courses that are a sight better than some of the private ones I've played.
Outside Dublin, I played the Glebe in Trim twice in the past month and was very impressed. Only €16 midweek and it is impeccably maintained. Downside: Changing rooms are portakabins and no clubhouse for a pint and a sambo afterwards. But you can't argue with the price.

For beginners or people just looking for an enjoyable game of golf, Dunmore golf club in Galway is good for €15.

The rate isnt meant to really equate to its quality. Like anything that is (or purports to be) at the top end of the market (wine, cars, cloths, addresses etc), rather than the good/service itself, a greater and greater proportion of the money you are handing over is paying for the exclusivity/cache element rather than the inherent product.

I suppose some folk have more money than sense.
I've played a K-club a few times, but never had to pay.
I could never spend that kind of dough on 18 holes.

The dearer courses are usually well maintained but the thing you are paying for is the kudos of saying that you have played on a dear course. The price will also tend to keep any "riff-raff" away....you know the type who hang around forums.

Castlecomer in Co. Kilkenny is a nice one. Not sure what the green fees are but I played in an open there for a tenner.

Should mention that it's quite hilly :D
