i dont know if this should be here or in computers, but how does a forum or website ban your i.p. if you have dynamic i.p. address like iol or something? i've neither been nor intend to be banned from anywhere, i'm just curious!

it could be done using cookies... if you're banned from boards.ie for example, it would store that in a special cookie that is read everytime you login/create a new account/access the site and if you're banned ... you can feck off :)

It's not done like that here afaik, but i suppose that's how it COULD be done

they can block a address range such as 192.168.*
    or something to that affect
    very easy do
of couruse the back draw is it would ban everyone from that range or ISP

That would be pretty worthless. All you would have to do is delete the cookie and you'd be back in.

just what i was going to say.

In other words, its impossible to ban a dynamic IP, ever. (unless you dynamically get reassigned an already banned IP :P)

there is no real way to ban a person who is on a dynamic IP.
So, if you're up to boldness, disconnect BB and go dynamic!

Yes it is worthless for someone who knows how the banning system works. For those less computer-literate people, they'll think it's "magic interweb stuff" :)

so basically there's no way a server can block a computer connected using dynamic i.p? and one more thing, say someone was doing some really bold webby stuff, i.e. cc fraud or child porn or something, how can they track who the person is if they have a dynamic i.p. address, or would an isp log who they administer i.p. addys to?
reading over that post it looks like i'm planning something! :D

instead of a black list you could have a white list, - if a clean cookie (or token) is not on your pc you can't re-connect.

To be sneaky you could add a second hidden token or use a machine based hash in case the cookie gets deleted.

Or you could use one of the IE exploits to plant something nasty on a Banned persons PC to do various configuration tweaks to it (eg: set monitor refresh rate to 200Hz and trash-flash BIOS on HDD/Videocard/systemboard/WiFi card etc.)

    Off we go to nets/comms.

is that not kind of illegal??

Yes, they would have logs as to who was assigned what address and when, so it would be relatively simple for them to find out who was being naughty.

An ip address can be banned from a website, but if somebody else is assinged that ip address (which is very likely to happen) then that person will of course not be able to access the site.

Sites I use have banned IP ranges (a given ISP will have an assigned range of dynamic IPs). This obviously bans many of their users at the same time, but a concurrent complaint to the ISP from a site, pointing out that a range of their users is going to get banned because of the misbehaviour of one, usually gets the individual kicked off the ISP pretty fckin quick.

So the moral is - if youre gonna misbehave, do it big time and you will not only get banned from a site, you will prolly lose your ISP as well. If you're gonna be illegal, you'd better hope you gave your ISP false details ;)

Giving your ISP false details is irrelevant as their logs will show the phone number you dialled from.
