dual barton 2500's or athlon 64?

i was looking to get a new rig a little while ago, but as i was working away at the time, i never got round to it. some of the other boardsters had recommended overclocking a dual 2500 Barton M setup at the time for the best bang for my buck (i'm usually doing several heavy duty things at once), but i've been hearing good things about the athlon 64's (specifically the fx ones) so i was wondering if maybe it might be a better course of action.

i'm trying to think ahead to the day when HL2 comes out and the rest of my world is going to disappear, and i get a new GPU.

so would the dual barton be up to the job, being as HL2 isn't likely to be multi threaded and would only be using one of the CPU's.

    where do i stand?

You would be better off with the a64 as games won't take advantage of the dual setup.

If you usually run a lot of apps at once you should look into a p4. They really are better in this department with HT but will perform slightly less in games. They have dropped in price recently as well.

The Dual Xp2500 bartons wouldnt perform near as well as an AMD64 would in gaming, and the AMD64 wouldnt perform anything like the Dual CPU rig for multi tasking.

I think bloodbath's suggestion of a P4 is a very good one. It performs close to what an AMD64 would in gaming, and it is pretty good for multitasking (although HT isint the same as having 2 CPU's).

I think the last time it was nearly all multitasking and very little gaming?

[edit] PS if your looking along the lines of an FX then you must have a very big budget (bigger than last time?) so something like Dual Opterons or Xeons might be an option? (limited FSB kills the MP's in gaming, the Opterons and Xeons are much better).
