Hi All, I posted a thread last week about a problem I ran into building my machine http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=182206 . I've since got a mate to have a look at it who runs a business which includes pc building & configuration. All the usual precautions were followed such as grounding the machine and myself also via electro static straps so blowing something that way is unlikely. We tested using an older crt monitor thinking maybe the grapics card I used wasn't compatible with the newer ViewSonic. The same message was displayed. We then took out all unnecessary pci cards and left just the "basics" in the machine, i.e 1 ram stick, 1 hard drive, graphics card, but to no avail. Thinking maybe the grapics card could be faulty we tried it in an alternative machine where it worked fine. So as a last resort we reseated the processor, again no joy, though as it seemed to be inserted correctly the first time I didn't expect the result to be any different after reinsertion. Once power is turned on the motherboard seems to light up fine, the led is green as though everything is in working order, fans attached to the board operate fine, but other than that nothing happens, so based on this the only conclusion we can come to then is that the processor is faulty. Anyone any ideas of other possible reasons for this? it's doing my head in at the moment :(, also does anyone have any knowledge on Overclockers return & replace policies?

    Cheers

    Damo

I *think* that if a CPU is faulty then the motherboard will beep, trying looking up the list of beep codes for you motherboard (either through google or manufacturers web site) and see if you can find one for faulty cpu. It's possible the motherboard is dead, looking back at your previous thread you couldn't even power off so this seems likely to me. One possibility is that you didn't put in the spacers correctly to stop the motherboard touching the sides of the case ?

not getting any beeps out of the motherboard even though it's correctly connected to the onboard speaker, so yeah, I've been wondering if it could be that. First thing I made sure to do was put the spacers in place though, only handled it by the edges as well during assembly so don't think I could have damaged it. My mate is ordering in another 939 chip this week for another machine which he said he'd try in mine as a last test, guess that will sort of tell for sure which is causing the problem. Are you saying though that the mobo should beep no matter what if there's a problem with any of the other components, other than itself that is?

They should afaik, that doesn't mean they always do though. Trying your mates cpu would be worth a go, as would trying your cpu on his motherboard, that way you should be able to work out which is the problem and RMA it.

On the off chance that your motherboard has on-board graphics, have you tried using that ?

Unfortunately it doesn't come with one, it's the Asus A8V Deluxe (Socket 939) Wireless Edition. But yeah, reckon waiting until he gets that chip in and trying that would probably be better than just sending back the CPU & later finding out it was fine and it was actually the mobo. Getting well frustrated with it though, got Thief 3 & Doom 3 last week, thought I'd be in gaming heaven at this stage ;) .
You know of any experiences in RMA'ing OcUK?

I actually just RMA'd a Galaxy 6800 and had no problems, should be getting replacement today. There was all kinds of problems with them Galaxys though, I'm not sure if they're always as good. You may want to check up on their site too, some places have a time limit for things like this so you may want to email them and let them know what you're going to try if that'll put you over their limit. There's a few threads around about OcUK, I think they're generally very good but not always.

Only recieved the parts 11 days ago and they know I was waiting on the back ordered graphics card before I built it so hopefully no problem there, just waiting for a reply from them now, think it's a bank holiday there today though so no idea if they've anyone working.

    Cheers for the help
