Box not detecting HDD

I've got two boxes that won't detect their hard disks. When I turn them on the hard disk LED lights up constantly and so does the LED on the CD drive. So magically when I plug out the CD drive both machines find the hard disks without any bother.

I've double checked the jumper settings and tried different IDE cables. Made sure everything is ok in the bios too. I've probably missed something simple at this stage but I'm tired and not thinking straight so anybody any ideas whats going on??

    Cheers
    Rory

Try setting the jumper on back of CD to "slave"...(ensuring drive is set to "master"), if that doesn't do it remove the jumper from CD entirely...sometimes that works...

    OR

Put HD on primary IDE and CD on secondary both set to "master"...

    See what happens...

Is the CD IDE connector keyed? If not, are you putting it in the right way around? Just one suggestion..

The connector is keyed so no fear of putting it in the wrong way around...

I'm only just up so I'll give the suggestions so far a try a little later and hope they work.

Here is an article offering many more possibilities:

Thanks I got it sorted removing the jumper on the cd drive did the trick. Strange cause I'm pretty sure these machines were working before.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me a few times...

AND I could swear the drives were working before...sometimes PCs get a LITTLE uncanny...

    Glad it's sorted...
