... they're everywhere and they look horrible on most people!

Why are people so happy to look so obviously manipulated by what high street stores decide is fashionable at any given time?

TBH, i always thought they looked classsy until the high street stores got hold of them. Now EVERYBODY has them & they don't look as nice anymore. They've ruined the poncho.. :(

That makes it sound like some sort of conspiracy theory! I think it's more a case of supply and demand myself.

Tbh I think that they're quite nice, as long as you don't buy the mass-produced ones from the boutiques and Dunnnes. I learned to crochet as a child and I've picked it up again to make my own ponchos and shawls, and I'm having lots of fun.

Take it from me girls, they look ridiculous.
Only Clint Eastwood looks good in a poncho.

I concur. I had a lovely light blue hooded poncho ... bought it years ago ... live in it during the summer .. and I just couldn't bring myself to wear it this summer... for fear of looking like a clone. I bought one there the other week ... its really nice .. but I feel like a goon wearing... gonna have to stick it in the closet for a year or two untill the phase has well past.

They are handy if you need to bring your security blanket out on a Saturday night.

As always, I'm in complete agreement D. About 12 months ago the Sienna Miller/ K Moss set were sporting the odd poncho and inspired by that I searched high and low to find one, a real big ethnic looking thing but they we're nowhere to be found. Boy am I happy now that I saved my euros a year ago cos I certainly wouldn't be seen dead in a poncho now. They are everywhere at the mo' typically worn by the style challanged !! I wanted one when they were kinda unusual and quirky, and they certainly aint any of those things anymore !!!!

I bought my girlfriend one two years ago. Nobody had them at the time, and it was quite funky. Still is. Although I do see the increase in people wearing them. People are such sheep.

It is not surprising that many people end up looking the same when you think of how little variety of clothes there is to be found in shops in Ireland compared to other countries. Most Irish towns have boutiques that do more individual clothes but the high street stores that most people shop in seem to have far fewer choices in terms of style than similar stores in France and Germany, in my experience. Our having a smaller population may be a factor in this but it doesn´t explain it fully from the point of view of the shops (why not try to sell more varied, unusual stuff?)
