Canon 20D, anyone tempted?

Read a decent review of the new Canon 20D and suddenly became glad I didn't jump for the 10D six months ago. NY Camera have it listed for €1399 body only, whereas the 10D is still listed at €1444.

    8.2 MP
    slightly lighter than the 10D
    same focal length multiplier
twice the buffer of the 10D
    2 extra AF points
    supposedly better built-in flash

I'd be led to wonder if the shops in the city are still trying to flog the 10D for €2k...

I've been thinking of getting a DSLR for a while now but have always been hesitant to spend so much cash. Thought about a 300D but preferred the look & feel of the 10D. What do you all camera buying & critical public think of this new offering?

If I had the money to spare or the photography skills to justify it, I'd go for the 20d. It's a beaut!

if you are taking photos professionally then buy it or the 1ds mark2

or if you're a very rich amateur then go for it. it's in the top 3-5 digital cameras available and the price is really good when compared to what else you can get. personally unless i needed all the extras it has over the 300D I'd spend the extra on another lens. Do you need that fast a buffer? Are you printing bigger than 12x8 a lot? Do you have Canon lens already?

    Looks like a sweet camera.
Don't think i could ever justifyt spending that much, unless i come into a lot of money. :D

Enjoy it, if you get it.
Be sure and post up lots of shots too. :)

I bought a used 10d 6 months ago, the thing is when you buy a 20d, they'll bring out a 30d and you never can be happy.

I still prefer my 27 year old hasselblad with 3 prime lenses [shame digi backs are so pricey]

Will I upgrade, no I'll buy another lens for my hasselblad maybe.

Of course you can be happy.
I mean i bought a kodak dx6490 a month or so ago, and i'd researched it and it was definitely the best camera for me to get. Had everything i wanted and a good price to match.
Now i'm home, i see that there's a dx7590 out, which is basically the next generation of the same camera, with some better features, improvements etc. but i'm still perfectly happy with what i got.

If you take the view that there'll always be something better just around the corner you'd never get anything.

If you took that view in relation to photography you'd never take a picture because there'd always be better light, a better angle, a better subject etc.

So just be happy with what you can get.

It sounds fantastic, but I'm not tempted at all. I'm still not using the full capacity of my 300D (without the hack!), and I'm perfectly happy with what I have. I don't want to get into the trap of equipment lust - I'll upgrade when the limits of the 300D start hampering what I want to do.

I'd rather spend some money on a couple of lenses and a decent tripod. :D

I'm glad it's appeared as it'll help drop the price of the Nikon D70 which i have my eye on.

As a Minolta user I'm going to hold out for the Dynax 7 Digital. The 20D does look like a very attractive package and if the 7 Digital doesn't deliver I might be tempted to switch to Canon.

I've already managed to justify the purchase of a DSLR to myself and ( most important of all) the missus. I'll spend upwards of €2,500 on a camera & kit and then pimp myself out to do that new "candid" style wedding photography people seem to be going for more along with the traditional pose & smile group shot photography.

If it works however, I'd probably die of shock :D

for wedding photos you'd be better off spending money on good lenses

i already have a few decent canon lenses... that's not to say I wont be expanding my collection of expensive glass however. time to start saving/winning the lotto.

Ac-Foto (Germany) are listing it at €1595 inclusive of VAT (@16.5% for Germany)...

...that 20D looks a bit out of my league. So I'm considering getting a 300D to start with. For around 1 grand it's the best Digital SLR out there, is it?

The 20D certainly looks nice but I'd rather have weather seals for that kind of money - the (cheap) Olympus has them as do the more expensive Canons.

PHOTOKINA (germany) is on very soon and I'd hold off until after that.

Pentax have a 'range' (incl a 300D/D70 killer) of DSLR's ready (pentax is what i use as they are by far the smallest, lightest and toughest DSLRs that take standard 35mm lenses).

Look at the Nikon D70 aswell - some regard it as competition to the 10D.

Dont forget, with Canon or Nikon, you have a massive selection of lenses to choose. That's got to be the key selling point for these brands, if you plan to take your photography seriously in the future

Once the 20D hits the shops, you can expect the price of the 10D to go through the floor, it wouldn't suprise me if it falls to the level of the 300D so maybe hold off on buying that 300D.

A word of caution on the 20D though, the CMOS sensor on the 10D was an absolute bugger to keep clean. The 20D, with an even more intricate CMOS censor is going to be even harder to maintain. There are sites out there with details on this, might want to google them to see what you might be getting yourself into.
