I'm running a Radeon 9800 Pro and it's absolutely fantastic.

Farcry runs perfectly at fun settings, not a split second of slowdown, and I'm currently running Doom3 on High detail with no slowdown either. I'd recommend the card unreservedly.

the radeon 9800 pro seems to hit the sweet spot between power and cost.

Thx a lot guys, Radeon 9800 seems to be the way to go. Want it primarily to play top end games.
    Anyone exp of good Nvidias?

I've not really had good experience with NVidia cards, but from what I hear, the latest ones are very good.

Still, I won't be throwing away my 9800pro anytime soon.

The previous generation of Nvidias cards (FX range) are easily outperformed by the equilavent ATI cards. But The latest range of cards from nvidia (6800) and ATI(X800) perform very closely. But nvidia has the edge when it comes to opengl (doom3)

Depends on your budget. If your going high end i'd get a 6800gt for about 400 euro.

The normal 6800's are very good as well for about 300 outperforming the 9800xt's.

You should really go for a 256mb card for next gen games, sure a 9800pro is fine for most games out now but a few months down the line it's gonna start struggling but it's still a great card for 200 euro.

It's hardly going to start struggling in a few months, BloodBath! Seeing as it runs Farcry and Doom 3 perfectly for me, aswell as the new 4.9 drivers bringing up the preformance on D3 alone considerably, and those games along with half life 2 being pretty much industry standard for a while to come, I'd certainly say it's got plenty of longevity left in it for at least into 2005. More if you've got an expeptional system behind it, and can tweak a bit.

By struggling I mean having to lower resolutions and detail to get a decent frame rate which is already starting with far cry and doom3.

It's a perfect mid-range card but I wouldn't call it high end anymore. Like I said it depends on his budget. He said he wanted a high end card.

Hard to know. Medium end the 9800pro should hold the fort for quite a while. Probably the best medium end card there is bar none. High end the best bang for buck appears to be the 6800GT. You want the ultimate performance when money is no issue the X800XT is king.
