I normally create partitions for XP when I install it and leave a lump of Hard Drive space untouched, then install Linux and it'll find the space and it will find the space and install itself and create the boot option on startup.

The fact you have no space could be a problem unless you can shrink the size of your xp partion or if you have several maybe you could remove one using partion magic.

    Yeah you have three options,

1: Get a copy of partition magic and resize your XP install leaving a decent amount of space for Mandrake

2: Wipe the HDD- partition using fdisk, reinstall XP, install Mandrakie, mandrake will install GRUB which takes care of the dual booting.

3: Buy a new HDD (10G would be PLENTY) and feck Mandrake onto that, again GRUB will take care of dual booting.

Above all create a bootable floppy with fdisk on it and backup priceless stuff before fecking around, it is a painful learning experience when you accidently bugger up the install and render your computer useless!

Why not try the bootable cd from Mandrake? I got it free with PC Live a few months ago, I'm sure there are other ways to pick it up.

Or, from their website MandrakeSoft Ireland , you can get the cd with a dedicated USB for storing personal settings for about €20. Cheaper than a second hard drive!

don't know if mandrake has ntfsresize - but on the knoppix cd it an option in qtparted - as an alternetive to partition magic.

Mandrake 10 has the ability to resize NTFS partition on installation, so that's sorted. No harm in backing up what you can't afford to lose though.

Either install GRUB onto the Master Boot Record or (my preference), choose to install GRUB to the Mandrake partition (e.g. hda3) and install GAG boot manager - http://gag.sourceforge.net/ to boot XP or Mandrake (via GRUB).

install wahtever os you want , then boot in with a cd, and install grub or lilo onto the mbr, sorted, you can do anything, best plan out your logical and extended partitions first though.
