Just installed Mandrake 10 and the first thing that struck me was that Totem really is a towering pole of crap. I'd like to be able to play everything from dvd's to mp3s and so on, ideally something like winamp.

    Bear in mind I'm a n00b, and when I say n00b I don't mean like, "hey I'm a n00b and I can't <insert incomprehensible jargon here>"

I mean an absolute n00b, like a housewife trying to use windows that's how much a n00b I am. Help me please so I can stop emboss laughing at me and screaming "N00000000B" @ me across IRC.

    Is probably the best.
It's on your install cds if it is Mandrake you're using.
I'd still prefer building from source then using the .rpms so you can include the dvd features. A great faaq on the site and remember man pages are your friends.

Ps. pay no attention to Emboss.

See, ste, I'd have no idea how to do that like.
    Eeeh, duuuh and such.

ordinarily I wound't but then when we need help we seek it in the strangest places- actually he took me by the hand and led me thru linux playskool and also linked me up a few places so I tip my proverbial hat to him. :o

    http://www2.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/MPlayer-1.0pre5.tar.bz2

Download that then right click and extract it somewhere.
Then right click and open terminal here or alt +t I think it is.
    Then ./configure --enable-gui

Give it a few minutes report any errors here.
If it finished without errors then log in as root by going
    su
    then type your root password
    then type
    make install
Go make some tea or something then when it finishes type
    gmplayer
hopefully the mplayer gui will launch.
Again if you recieve any errors post em up and we can help you further.
    And good luck.

but that wont work because mandrake is teh crud.

you just know its gonna fail trying to compile somthing like mplayer, it just wont be able to hack it.

    Mandrake probably can't echo "1 +1" |bc

anyhow if you happen to get it running. I recommend installing xmms and xmmplayer which is an mplayer plugin for xmms.
That basically gives you winamp. can play everything.

you'd be suprised how many ppl come up with the "install SuSe" or "install Red Hat", etc instead. I'm gonna stick with this f'ing thing anyways otherwise I'll spend the rest of my life installing other linux flavours and being told to install another one again...

Thanks fer yer help anyways- I'll try that tonight, if not I'll just bash my head off a brick wall.

or, you could just go to the control centre, intsall software, install mplayer. Enjoy.
