Lads, shaving with electrics or not

Can't see a clear debate about this...I'm sick of looking scruffy but I just hate blade-shaving every day or 2 to keep looking smooth. Hence, today I was looking in Argos at the range of Phillishave elec. razors that work with Nivea cartridges in the shower. They're quite expensive (100-200ish), although there's still a whole range of plain elec. razors for double their price.

    Anyone got one?
    - Why don't other companies have rival products? Are these Niveathingys overrated?
    - The cartridges are 7eu for 5 in Boots. Razor baldes may cost more but just how quickly do these Nivea cartidges go? Lets say you shave once every 2 days minimum.
    - Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance - I'm sick of the Mach3, not matter how good it is. :D

P.S. Any suggestions that I get off my ass, grow a beard, etc. less appreciated. I (should) shave 1-2 days cos I've dark growth it's not being vain! I've got a 50punt Philips elec. which burns the hell outa me!

Really? Does it just let you rinse with water or use in the shower too?
Sorry to ask, but do you reckon you have sensitive skin?

Actually - can you use shaving oil with these 'water-proof' up-market models if it'll help?

    Thanks for the feedback.

It can be rinsed with water.
I don't know if it can be used in the shower.
The model I have was one of the first
Philips brought out 2 models at first.
One for use with the gel pack and one without
I have been using this for nearly 2 or 3 years and it still great (got for xmas can't rember which year)

New Mach 3 'vibrating" razor just about to be launched - watch out for tv & newspaper ads....not sure when its available

It's a standard Mach 3 with a tiny motor in it to vibrate the blade - slimline battery in the handle - almost the same size as the existing one.

I'm in retail & got my advance pack yesterday - pretty damned good shave too - fun & buzzy :))

I find the philishave is ok but you don't get as close of a shave as with a Mach3. I use my philishave most of the time but I usually shave about once a week with a Mach3. The longer I leave it without a wet shave the worse my shave with the philishave seems to be.

The cartridges last ages. I don't go overboard with using them (but I do use them every time) and i've only had to buy refills once in 18 months. I think I still have a few of those left too.

As for using it in the shower I don't know but wetting your face first is good and it cuts down on irritation.

I have a Philishave 5806. Its only ok. I hardly use it. I get a much better shave with a razor. I don't think its any quicker with the Philishave and it always seem to miss bits. I've heard that the foil razors are better than the rotary ones. But I've never used anything other than a rotary one. The Nivea seems like a gimick to me. I rinse mine under the tap even though its not a waterproof one.

I guess it depends on the your shape and skin. Mine can irritate my skin, but thats probably because I shave over and over the same spots trying to get the spots which it keeps missing.

Personally I wouldn't get another Philishave. A Braun maybe. The Mach 3 razors are mile better. Though very expensive. But mine last about a month so thats not too bad.

The electric razor can be handy if your rushing, you can just throw it in your bag and shave in the bathroom at work with no mess. Thats abut it.

Huh? I get well over two months out of every blade, and I'd hardly call my stubble soft...

    Good man.

Andip: Thanks for that. Sounds 'interesting'. Page didn't load properly though sorry!

Think I'll give the Nivea ones a miss. Might just get a new washable electric though. The Braun self-cleaning thing looks great! :D

I've no experience with any of the gel ones, but I've found that the more expensive phillishave ones are pretty good. If you get one of the flexible, washable ones (Braun are terrible) it's about the easiest shave you can have with the least maintainance.

I say pretty good cos a wet shave with a razor gives a closer shave.

Funny I heard the Braun were better than the phillishave?

Yes, but unfortunately unless your face is dry, electric shavers just don't work. They don't work too well when your face is dry either. My Philishave is pretty irritating, it doesn't even remove that much hair. Mach 3s do a far better job but they're also far too much effort at 7am. I need a solution!

Use both! I find an electric (a Braun, closer than a rotary, IMO) fine for most of the face but not under the chin. So I use a mach3 for that part. The combo is quick, close and keeps the spend on blades to a minimum.

    Hi,
There's lots of reviews of Shavers here. I think it is worth buying a more expensive one, the cheap ones can be really nasty and ... bits of the grill broke off my braun...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭Bri

I'll give it a look thanks.

Think I might give a new electric one a go.

I personally don't like electric razors at all, I find that they pull at my skin leaving dry patches and can often be awkard to remove hair from the area around my cheek bones.

Bits of the grill broke off on my Braun too, and it never gave a particularly good shave.

The coolskin range is the washable, nivea Philips, the alternative is the Braun Freeglider range... same idea except it has a foil head instead of a rotary.

These 2 shaving systems are very different and depend on your age, race, shaving habits etc.
For instance europeans and africans have different hair types+ need different shavers.
The Philishave is the worlds most popular shaver. It is most durable and can deal with stubble that has grown a few days.
The foil type shavers (Braun, Remington, Hitachi, Panasonic, Eltron etc.) are technically closer, but this is achieved by a wafer thin foil between the face and the skin...hence the foil is very fragile and easily damaged. Also it finds it hard to cope with hair as it curls below the chin etc. So this isnt recommended for the very young or very old person to use.

The other thing to be carefull of is spares/accesories etc. Currently only 2 manufacturers...Braun and Philips have a backup service in this country... so when the shaver u buy in Argos etc breaks..u can hit problems.

Replacement foils cost from 15 euro to 29, while philips heads range from 33- 45 euro.

Let me know if you need any other advice.
