I know it's a good thing to get new people invloved and encourage people to play in the 50 game but do you not think a lot of the regulars who happened to not play in it before will turn up.

I think it's unfair on those who are paying that lots of people who play regularly can get a shot at our money for a fiver. It would put me off tbh. You should really put some limit on it. maybe first 10 new people or something!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭Iago

or you could bring along 4 of your mates/ random people on the street and pay €10 each instead of €50 ;)

    Yeah what Karlh said.

Plus "Bring your spouse/girlfriend and they get in ½ price & Bring a new player (someone who has not played the 50 game before) and they get in FREE*. "
Surely any spouse/girlfriend that comes along would play for free anyway as they'd be a new player?

I can see what ye're trying to do here and kudos for it but essentially you're asking regulars to fund the expansion of your game. Fair enough the repeat business could make the tournaments more lucrative for the regulars who (presumably) will have the benefit of experience over these new players and could thus potentially improve their winnings. However I do think its a lot to be asking to expect people to pay €50 into a tournament where you could have up to half the players playing for free.

Also will this offer extend to regulars from the Fitz and Merrion? I mean are we likely to see Norman (or whoever) there cackling on the night at paying a fiver into a tournament where he could get 1k for top prize?

Perhaps as Karlh said you should consider limiting it to first 10/20 players.

Those are interesting points we didnt think of. Both Hyzepher and Pudding brought their missus to the casinos recently (in an effort to get more time there I think!) and they both thoroughly enjoyed it so we thought we'd expand the game that way (as its not like many peoples spouses will have a shot at the cash!).

What if we made it the other way around. Spouse plays free and new players are half price?

i think you should just have everyone pay the same. a player's wife won the WPC recently. I think more than a few of the field would have been pissed off if she got a to play for free coz shes a gurl (ewww gurl germs!). anyone can get lucky.

this isnt like we are playing a $5 s&g tournie. €50 is still quite a lot of money to most players including me and when i pay it over, I expect to see 50% of €50*entrants if I win.

if you want new people I say hold €5 satellites beforehand to give them a feel for the game and a chance to get into the tournie or even a quick freeroll beforehand to limit the money taken from the prizefund.

btw....the last two tournies had perfect numbers imo, i agree with bringing poker to the masses but i'd rather not pay for it :)

    (hope i don't sound like a scabby b0ll0x)

A very good idea to get new players to play in theory, however in reality I agree with what some are saying. I've been meaning to come along when these events have been held, but with one thing or another (being away...working all hours under the sun etc) I haven't been able to make it. Therefore for the next one, if I finally can make it, I'd get in for free, which really isn't fair on regulars.

It's always good to try bring new players to the game, and I think it's a very noble attempt to do so, but perhaps you could somehow try and reward the faithful regulars! Just my two cents!

Yeah, I can see what you guys are saying. We're gonna have a rethink this. If you want to help by suggesting something that does the same thing then fire away.

This is a lot of what is going to make Suited Aces work btw, the fact that all of us can talk here and work sh|t out about what we want as players...

Have to agree with Dirkey, I've been unable to make this one before for a variety of reasons (ok, I have teenage kids) and if I could manage next Friday I'd get in free, which would seem unfair. How about the fiver satellite idea?

i think €5 satellites or a freeroll beforehand would be a great promo?

you could hold a completely separate tournie beforehand for new players with a smaller buyin and multiple tickets?

you could also have a thing where the highest finishing new player (who doesn't actually get to the final table) gets a prize of some sort?

i want a suited aces cheque book and pen if you do either!!! :)

I think this is quite a good idea. Perhaps the top few (whatever percentage you feel is good) of the new players could get their money back or something like that? The satellites and freerolls are also a good idea.

Me envisages Mrs.Hyzepher cracking my bullets with 2,7 on the first hand.

If that happened and she'd paid in then I suppose it's just a bad beat, but if she got in for free and it happened I think I might be a touch annoyed.

Now Chris I'm sure your wife wouldn't do that but people who get in free generally don't care if they win or lose. If the deal goes ahead be prepared for some insane poker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,549 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

I have to agree with the above sentiments. I wouldn't be terribly interested in playing in a 50 quid tournament, if Joe Bloggs (no offence Joe) is playing for free.

How about a 40% discount for new players, i.e. 30 euro. Then the regulars have the attaraction of the newbie extra 30 quid, and the new players are getting into a 50 quid tournament for just 30 euro (+5 registration fee)? Just a suggestion!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭Imposter

What about spouses half price and if you bring 3 or more friends you play free. That way the friends can do a deal if they want and it means they all could get 25% off the entry fee. It doesn't take that much from the prizefund and gets more players in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    Ok so,
If I come and pay 50 quid, I can bring my girlfriend along and she only has to pay 25, then I could bring a friend along and they only have to pay 0?
So it'd be a combined cost of 75 for 3 people?
If I do this will I be screwing you guys over, cause I don't want to abuse the system, its just that the offer realllys suits me :D

p.s. my girlfriend is a complete and utter rock its scary :) also I've to build up her rep so she can steal your blinds :P

I like the idea of the half price for the woman/man :)
[Joke: Can I bring along someone and claim I'm gay? If not lawsuit :)]
I think bringing along a friend for free is a bit silly, maybe just make it, bring along a friend for free and they get 50% off again. so it'd be like 25 for them aswell

While people might be annoyed at this freezeout, you have to think of it as a long term investement.
Sure in this game you might get beaten by someone who only paid 25 because they just wouldn't lay down that flush draw, but if you et them hooked you can win 2/3 times over the next six months if they enjoy it.
    Think long term!!!!

Hold fire for a while... We're having a think.
Personally I think the idea that the highest ranking new player gets his cash back is a nice touch.

Sufficent people think its a bad idea that we'll have to reconsider. Perhaps a 10-euro long blinds, STT for wives or newbies on the side....

As the one who suggested this I can give you my initial idea behind it.

I hope we can all agree that a bigger tournament is a better tournament - more prizes and bigger prizes. The idea behind the 'friend for free' was to basically try and increase the amount of regular players by giving someone an incentive to come the first time after that they pay their €50 - it was to be limited to one free friend per player so its abuse was minimised entirely. I know some of you maybe put out that someone is getting to play for free but this only happens once and then they start to increase the prize fund. Maybe it was a bit ambitious.

The spouse for 1/2 price was to be a permanent thing - i.e. bring them every week and they get in 1/2 price. Obviously the first time would be for free under the above promotion. The thinking behind this was to allow players to get out to the game more often as they could get their wife/girlfriend involved for only a little more cash. Again I wasn't expecting the negative reaction so againit might have been ambitious.

Personally I would encourage organisers of tournaments to get new people - and hopefully new regulars - to play in the games. In reality the size of the tournament - within reason - has little overall effect on the chances of you winning.

These promotions are only controversial - if at all - for the first few and by then there would be very little friends etc coming in for free but the size of the tournaments would hopefully have increase.

Anyway - due to the negative reaction we will have to rethink these promotions.

This sounds like the best idea so far.
I'd say Spouses play half price their first time in, and *only* their first time in. Either they'll have liked poker after the first time and be willing to 'pay and play' from then on , or else they'll have had a taster for cheap.

The 'Bring 3 friends and You play free' sounds like a very good idea. We get the player pool and prizefund swollen by 3 players and 150 quid and the punter who drags his mates along get a one time free entry (unless he brings 3 *more* mates along).

I think those objecting so far have made good points about it being slightly unfair that they pay and have an equal chance to may 10 people who have paid nothing.

Am I missing something here? The size of the tournament directly affects your chance of winning.

Just to add my 2cents, I think any promotions involving free entries or half price entries are unfair on the regular players.

Perhaps we could do something like "Bring a friend/spouse" and they entered into a freeroll freeze out with the winner getting a ticket to the 50 game and we'll pay the entry for that player. That way the main event isnt effected and the new comers get a chance to see how its played.
    Just a thought.

Hats off to The Suited Aces lads for coming up with ideas to get new faces into the game.

I also feel that Free entries into the €50 game isnt the way to go. Wouldnt be happy if Gf/wives, renta friends (in large numbers) got in free whereas muggins is payin €50 for the privilage.

Its a good idea, but short of running €5 entry satalites intothe main event for about 20+players for 2 tickets, that would be about it.

Feel the €50 tounament possible just isnt the event to be used? Maybe beginner Tounies as side events to teh €50 or on a different date altogether?

So what is the story about this game then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

€10 satellites at 6pm. Registration for main event is at 7pm and we should be kicking off at 7.20.

No other promotions besides the sats at six.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

I suppose the sats structure could be at the discretion of whoever turns up for them. We could have 11 people sitting down paying €5 each for one ticket or €10 each for two. It'd be up the majority of players who want to take part.

I'll be there from six anyway. Probably looking like a zombie after this nightshift. In case anyone is afraid, I do not hunger for human brains.

sucky, those promotions were cool :(

We'll find a way to do it that everyone likes. The whole point of this exercise is to listen to feedback from the players!

Interestingly the Merrion have killed their freegame in favour of our 50-FO!! So no Monday freeroll tonight (which is a pity but c'est la vie).

Thinking of coming in for the satellites at 6 - but don't have my drivers license with me. Will they accept me in there or will I need to get it?

Its like the Fitz, you are *supposed* to have face-id but you can bring it the next time!

The sat structure will be 10 euro buy in, no rebuys, top two get two tickets if we get 10, otherwise first gets a ticket and second gets the remainder in credit.

It will follow the usual SNG structure. (reasonably quick blinds, probably 10 minutes maybe 15 for one or two levels, 1000 chips to start)
