i have a laptop and pc, both runnin xp pro, connected via a crossover cable. up until a few days ago, it was working fine. now when i go into network places on pc, all it shows are the shares on the pc and if i go into network places on laptop, it shows both computers shares, however, on the laptop shares under "Computer Name" it sez "Unknown". The Laptop shows up on my network but gives me access denied crap every time i click on it. im running a website on both and can access each website from each computer, so hardware is working fine. So, can anyone tell me how to sort that access denied crap? on each share i've clicked on Full Access for Everyone. i dont think ive changed anything except installed mcafee security center but only the antivirus. XP firewall is off too. thanx.

the best thing to do is install windows 2000. Sorry but xp is a nightmare for networking. It tries to assume too much. I guarantee if you took everything off. removed everything to do with networks then plug it all in again and boot it would work or not work in a different way.

I assume you can ping each pc no problem? I had a simlar problem with 3 pc's all with xp. 1 could see 2 and 2 could see 3 but 1 couldn't see 3 and 3 could see everyone. to this day we still have not figured out why. we all reverted to 2000 pro and it all works as should.

Soz man, maybe someone else will have better advice. cables might also be causing problems if they aren't 100%.

if he can access a website on each from the other then its not a hardware or networking problem. Its either XP being stupid with shares or McAfee blocking shares - has either imposed some sort of security policy ?

Sorry to state the obvious but have you tried removing mcafee security center ? :)

Also - the usual suspects - usernames on each machine are the same +groups/passwords etc ? no other changes ?

it might be that mcafee coz its the only thing ive installed recently. it was workin 100% before that but i only installed the antivirus in the mcafee security centre. left all the spamkiller and firewall out. both are in the same workgroup aswell called "HOME". its just bein a bitch!
