Toshiba Satellite not recognising DVD+R discs

I've had this problem for a while but have ignored it as I haven't really needed to burn DVD's - but now that I do need to, it's getting in the way.

My Toshiba Satellite SP10-804 notebook/laptop computer with DVD RW/R drive is not recognising any brand of recordable DVD discs I try to use in it.

Windows shows the drive as "DVD-RW Drive (D:)" in the "My Computer" window so it seems to be recognising it properly, but whenever I put in a recordable DVD, it just accesses for ages and eventually decides theres no disc in there.

I've tried Philips, Memorex and Verbatim discs - all to no avail. I have both Nero (version 6.0.0.11) and Alcohol 120% (Version 1.9.2 build 1705) installed. I'd like to be able to back stuff up to DVD...

    Any suggestions?

Do you know the make and model of the dvd writer.
What kind of blank media are you using, there are 2 formats, dvd+r and dvd-r
your drive may not be compatable with one of the formats

Under the DVD/CD-ROM drives section of Device Manager, it says both:

"AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device" and "TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112"

    4X/2X DVD-R Read/Write
    4X/1X DVD-RW Read/Write
    8X DVD-ROM Read
    24X/16X CD-R Read/Write
    10X CD-RW Read/Write
    24X CD-ROM Read
    1X DVD-RAM (4.7GB) Read

It only writes DVD-R's not +R's according to here

Oh by the way, dont know if i made it clear, that means that the discs you have wont work in the drive. You need different discs (-R's).

    The difference between DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW explained

Doesnt normally come up now as most drives are compatible with both.

Also a good place to buy discs would be http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/ and http://www.pricestorm.co.uk
