PowerBook to DVD

Bought a Yakuma DVD cheap on Amazon (excellent so far). It comes with an S-Video cable, and I hooked up my PowerBook and attempted to play Y Tu Mama Tambien, which someone had recorded onto the hard drive.

I was playing it on VLC (a program that plays films), and hoping that it would find its way along the S-Video cable into the DVD player and thence to the TV. But it didn't.

I tried going to System Preferences/Displays and clicking Detect Displays, but this didn't convince it; it didn't seem to detect the TV as a display.

    Anyone done this successfully?
