I have been thinking about this for a while,do you think the MOBO awards (Music Of Black Origin) are racist....?could we have a Music of White Origin without being called racist,I dont think we could.Maybe its just the name as I dont no to much about the awards ie do you have to be black to win.Or this could just be Political Correctness gone into over drive...?

it's a load of old hokum any which way you look at it. Most genres of modern music owe a not inconsiderable debt to 'black music'...

if you consider that Elvis was the chap to bring what was black music to white folks by taking a bit of country and mixing it with blues to give us rock'n'roll, the beatles took that and added a bit of white skiffle music and from then on, modern pop music developed, but the black element has always been there.

any 'dance' side has all come from the 'black' streets as well -going back to disco, swing, rap...

It sounds like political correctness gone into over drive. Although I'm not sure if it's *actually* limited to being won by black artists, or just by people playing music with African, Carribean, etc origins.

I'm pretty sure it's the latter, or there would be quite an uproar. In that case it's just an unfortunately misleading name. Does anyone know for sure?

(Actually looking at the site, many white artists/industry types won last year, so it is just a bad sounding name.)

    Em Jamie Cullen is nominated.

I only know this because of an article in the guardian about the awards. I'm not a fan honest.

I think it is the type of music, rather than the colour of the skin of the performer, that is a factor. So it is pretty much the same as the Country Music Awards, except they don't call that the Old White Redneck Music Awards :)

"Music of White Origin" does have a slightly sinister ring to it alright!

You are right,I just done a quick search and came up with this....

Mobo awards marred by anti-gay violence
Gay protesters assaulted by screaming homophobic mob
    By OutRage! News Service

A screaming homophobic mob attacked Peter Tatchell and threatened to kill other members of the gay rights group OutRage! outside the MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards Ceremony at the London Arena from 6pm tonight, Tuesday 1 October 2002.
Yelling “Kill the batty boys” and “Kill chi chi men” (Jamaican slang abuse for queer), 25 mostly black teenage music fans kicked, punched, spat on and hurled beer cans, coins and cigarette lighters at Tatchell after he held up a placard with the words “MOBO rewards anti-gay hate”.
The placard referred to the fact that reggae stars Elephant Man, TOK and Capleton had been nominated as ‘Best Reggae Act’ at the MOBO Awards - despite their history of violent homophobic lyrics that advocate the murder of gay people.
Other members of OutRage! displayed placards emblazoned with the slogans: “Black singers! Stop bashing gays!” and “MOBO = Music Of Bigoted Origin”. They were also subjected to homophobic abuse and threatened with assault.
Fearing further attacks from a crowd of 250 black music fans, OutRage! were forced to abandon their peaceful protest and had to be escorted out of the area by police.
“The collective homophobic hysteria was absolutely terrifying,” said Mr Tatchell. “It was like what white racists did to the black civil rights marchers in the Deep South during the 1960s. For a moment, I was in fear of my life. The hatred in those young people's eyes was frightening. Some of them looked like they would kill me if they had the chance.”
“It is time more black community leaders spoke out louder against the violent homophobic attitudes of sections of black youth. Their silence means that anti-gay hatred in the black community often passes unchallenged. The prime victims are black lesbians and gay men.”
