Best Irish Produced TV?

Time and time again, threads here turn into RTE-bashing threads. Its very very easy to pick out the programs that are brutal, but are there any home-produced shows that people like?

Some off the top of my head that I like are :

Reeling In The Years (archive footage of news events from a certain year, with music from that year as a backing track)

The Restaurant ('celebrity' cooks a 3 course meal for invited guests and critics, his/her identity hidden until the end of the show, rating given at the end - simple format, but usually very entertaining.)

Prime Time (depends on the topic in question, but usually pretty good)

    Questions and Answers (ditto)

Buried Alive (One on one interview with Dara O'Briain)

The Panel (Panel talk show - would be better without regular guest Fiona Looney, but still pretty good)

Any others that people LIKE? (No Winning Streak/Telly Bingo/Late Late/Daniel O'Donnell bashing, please!)

Reeling in the years seems to take the bad stuff from each year. It's depressing to watch.

I'll ditto that, the first few were dodgy and Looney's bore but it has potential.
Will Net-sorry RTE 2 bring it back?

    Mike.

TG4 stuff is consistently excellent. On RTE, I'm surprised to find that Fair City, which used to consist of people agreeing with each other, has become pretty good.

Reeling the years is very good. I wish they would keep making past 1999 and show it each year around the new year time.

Also prime time is good. I like it the Prime time intesigates better. Think its much more like panamora.

They have made a simlar programme usually shown on New Years Eve after the 6.1 News. It isn't as good, I think its because you know what happened the year after, and the producers play on that for example Mr. "you know who", who they couldn't mention in 1996 for fear of a legal battle.
The Restaurant ('celebrity' cooks a 3 course meal for invited guests and critics, his/her identity hidden until the end of the show, rating given at the end - simple format, but usually very entertaining.)

    Yeah very good show.

    Over on TV3

    Adgenda

    Over on TG4

    Amu Le ....
    Ros Na Run
    7 Lá

and dont forget the Clinic on RTE 1.

Reeling in the Years is good. They had one called Seven Ages which traced the history from the foundation of the state to the present. A lot of their documentaries are good. Sport and Current Affairs tend to be good. Light entertainment and comedy are their weak points.

    buried alive was surprisingly good

Yep, a brilliant show & one of my favourites.

Apparantly the reason they can't make a DVD set of it is to do with copyright issues. i.e. they can only obtain broadcast clearance as opposed to video clearance.

RTE rejected the idea and Dermot Morgan went to Channel 4 to get it made, and as they say, the rest is history.

...and to this day there still kicking themselfs for it,
In fairness if they did make it the church would have went nuts over it properly worse then they did when RTE aired it.

ah I knew it was something like that, in fairness its a f**king shame it really is, It properly has to be one of my fave programs to see on RTE and I hardly ever see it

    They were never offered it.

This is one of those totally unsubstantiated urban myths that gets trotted out far too often.

Reeling in the Years is easily the best (and probably ONLY good) thing RTE have ever produced IMHO.

In fact it's SO good that I've even went to the bother of taping every single episode in order to have them for repeat viewings. I would willing even have bought the series too except their website say's it'll never be released due to royalty issues. Pity! :(

Pigman I know its a longshot but any chance of a copy of the tapes?

The only good program off RTE in the past few years I have seen is reeling in the years.

Sometimes the political debate show on late at night(cant remember its name) is good too.

As for TG4, only good thing on it is amu and american shows :/

Yeah reeling in the years is great, barely ever see it though.

I know I'll get slated it for this but I thought Charity 525 was a really good idea...but extremely badly executed.

I quite like Townlands. It's essentially a 30 minute mini-documentary which focuses on a very small segment of society in each episode. For example, one show was all about people who regularly walk their dogs in the Phoenix Park. Another followed some school children in Dublin's inner city as they were making their Communion.

Would You Believe? Is a good show too. It deals mostly with topics related to religion and faith, again in the mini-documentary style. Excellent stuff.

It's a shame that RTE hype up programmes like Celebrity Farm and You're A Star so much, yet these programmes are practically ignored. Obviously they are hyped to get viewers and thus, a lot of money from the text message voting! Shame..

Reeling in the years is a joy to watch. I was taping them all on sky+ until my box decided it didn't wanna be a sky+ box anymore and deleted them all. I love the sly digs at certain people (like the episode opening with CJH saying the country's finance were a state) and how it's like an eveolving soap (notice how Bertie just randomly appears in single close ups more and more as the 80's end and 90's get into swing). I was very quick to put it down in the past until I saw a similar 10 minute british version which was awful.

CU Burn was hilarious - it was made by TG4 ages ago, don't know if they're still showing repeats but for me that wins hands down.

I'm a big fan of Father Ted but C U Burn was funnier still.

Ah the Des Bishop work experience thing has to be the best home produced programme in the past year. I also reckon Bachelors Walk was one of the better ones rte produced

Reeling in the Years is brilliant.

Loved The Big Bow Wow and The Clinic - anyone know when they're comin back?

Quite like Questons & Answers too

    ;)

    What about Paths to Freedom?

Ye, Paths to Freedem was excellent, especially liked Deirdre O'Kane in that one.

Don't hate me people, I know most can't suffer her, but she's not that bad!

She gave me the horn in a few episodes of it...

Can't say she had the same effect on me (not that way inclined!), but I just found her really funny.

You should get the DVD she made in Vicar Street, its brilliant and she might give you the horn in it too ;)

    Warning!

Reeling currently goes from 1970 to 1999. However a NEW run of episodes is starting NEXT Friday September 10th at 830pm. The first episode will be 1962 so presumably this will run until 1969 (8 eps.)
