Capturing analogue images into PC

    Hi,

I just need a quick help in capturing analogue images into a PC.
    I have a Hi8 camcorder with s-video output and a workstation Silicon Graphics 320 with a s-video input.
As editing software I will use either Movie Maker by Microsoft (….) or PowerDirector by Cyberlink.
Do you know if images will be automatically converted from analogue into digital by simply connecting the 2 devices together or I’ll need some sort of capturing device/card in order to make the format conversion ?

    Thanks!

As long as you have s-video in the pc does all that automatically.

Any video editing package will do it. If you're a newbie tho (which i can tell you are) i'd sugest starting off with windows movie maker 2. It comes with XP when updated via windows update or if you have service pack 2.

    Thanks again.
I have been working with video editing for the past 2 years, but I’m a slow learner. :)
I always used DV cameras connected via firewire. Software: Adobe, Pinnacle, Cyberlink and Microsoft.
Never had any issue or problems.

This time is different because I am using a PC which is not mine and a quite old Hi8 camera.
The camera is recognized by the PC video proprieties, connected directly to s-video-in to the PC, but I cannot find any software recognizing the device.
When I start capturing, they all state: there is no device connected, please check connections…bla…bla..bla.

Anyway, I`ll tell my client to get a newer camera and make the recordings again !! 

If you're using the s-video cable, you should remember that audio doesn't travel over it, only video. You'll have to take a cable from the headphone jack on the camera to the input on your soundcard to recieve audio.

Can you dub footage into your DV camcorder using the analogue AV / S-Video connections?

Takes a bit longer, but it's much easier to simply dub from analogue to DV and then capture on your PC via firewire.
