Leaving woes

OK, I am currently in a job I hate and hate and hate (so much so I cant think of new words for hate).
I'm getting paid on friday, and decided that this would be my last day (unknown to them). The money I made would cover my debts, and give me a chance to find a pt job before college starts...
I put off signing the contract for a week or two, because I didnt want to say I'd give 1 months notice (which the contract states), and then not, just incase they could do something. Today I was told I had to sign it or else I couldnt get on the pay roll, I am pretty sure thats illegal, but I knew that any argument I made would just delay me getting paid and force me to stay there for longer than the end of the week if I wanted to resolve the issue, so I signed it.
Now, If i ring monday morning to say "got a new job, better, closer" etc, as well as a few apologetic words like "only found out on saturday, sorry I couldnt give notice, but they want me to start now", can they do anything to me? and if so, are they likely to?
Once I get paid, they wont have any money belonged to me, and I'm not looking for a reference, so thats no bother... anything else I should expect besides a frowning upon?

You've only been in the job 2 weeks then?

    just over a month.
From what I understand, under 13 weeks doesnt require notice, or is that just on the employers side, I also figure that that becomes null and void once a contractual agreement has been made, or is that just an agreement between two rather than legally binding?

no contract overrides your statutory rights. Although, I've no idea what time frame those rights give you :)

They can't force you to work 1 months notice. ANd I don't think they can mention it in a reference. The law is on the employee's side here.

    cool.
I dont care about the reference, I dont want one from them, good or bad. Although I do know that one of my old jobs claimed I didnt work notice, even though I did...:s, something I meant to clear up some time ago, actually...

Anyway, once they cant touch me for not working the month, Im happy.

    Thanks all!

If you have signed a contract, legally you have to give a month's notice.

But if you don't, there is not much they can do about it. They *could* sue you for additional costs of hiring a replacement (if you were working on a special project or something) but they are not likely to do so.

well I had my last day today, will ring in monday to tell them I'm gone.

I have an e-mail from my (old) boss telling me I had to sign the contract by the end of the day (tuesday) or else I couldnt get paid, and I also didn't get paid for overtime (there is no overtime in the contract, but you do a lot. We were told on a few of the longer days that overtime would be arranged). So I figure I've gotten my ass well covered if they try anything. Firstly, I can say I signed the contract under duress, and had no chance to get representation on it, thought I'd miss my pay etc. And if they say I owe them money for training in people, I'll tell them I worked at least a week worth of over time (in a month!! No wonder they dont pay it!), they can keep that money I was promised. I wouldnt see it anyway I'd bet.

I knew the contract was a piece of shít, but I needed the money and knew it was short term, otherwise I wouldnt have agreed to no pay/time in leiu for overtime and I would have argued my case regarding not getting paid for not signing the contract.
thanks again for all the feedback.
