I have just been called for a Microsoft interview as a SW engineer in the Office Server division.
Has anybody been through the interview process at Microsoft and as such can give me any tips as to the technical questions asked. Any information on specific examinations on algorithms or technologies would be very useful.

I was asked certification-like questions. What are the 7 objects of ASP etc. Stuff like that. Depends which technology you are using. The MS interviews seem to be a bit of a lottery. I know clueless fools that have passed and technical gurus who have failed and vice versa. I have worked on contract with MS before, but to be honest I have no idea what they are looking for. I didn't get the last interview I did for them.

I used to work for Microsoft. The interview was grand.

One thing about Microsoft in Ireland is that the people work there are not the brightest (compared to other IT companies - the work there is pretty mongo) so the interview was not so tough. So don't worry.

Do you have the names of who is interviewing you? Or at least what division you'll be working for? I might know them...

The Microsoft interviews are pretty tough.

Previously they were easier because much of the work was localisation related, and just involved looking at UI and looking for string truncations and UI related issues. This has changed dramatically in the last few years in most product groups.

Nowadays it's much more development orientated, and the job descriptions generally require a good coding language. C/C++/C# etc.
Expect the general HR questions, and also technical questions, relating to the product you're working on.

Try to expect what they're going to ask - you should be thinking about the next version of the product, in your case Office 12. What's new and upcoming - Longhorn, XAML, C# 2.0, XML, scripting, coding etc. Also expect to receive a code snippit, and be able to determine what's going on in the code, where the errors are or how to rewrite it in a more efficient manner. You can also expect to be up at the white board writing a code snippit as well.
