Id advise keeping well away from Celerons. They have small cache (the very fast memory on the chip) when compared with the P4's , and they also have crippled FSB.

If your looking for a budget machine then look at the AMD XP's, they are much faster than the Celerons.

Whats your main usage? and rough budget?

Avoid celerons at all costs then.....get a decent pc with that budget

i was lookin at the prices on komplett, for 129 i can get a 2.4 and for 195 i can get a 3.0 but the on elara i could get a XP2600 for 121! whats the story there i taught xp's were ment to be budget chips?

Elara are quite expensive tbh. Look for an XP2500 and overclock it.

I'd go for an Mobile xp 2500 (If you can found it!!) and a good overclocking motherboard such as an Abit NF7-S V2.0. Should be able to over clock that to decent levels....

If your going for a buget machine avoid celerons I think they only have 256k cache compared to the 512k of the Athlon XP and the 1MB Cache of AMD Athlon 64 and Intel P4 chips.

The athlon xp was orginally a contender against the P4 but its fallen into buget status now. The top athlon XP the 3200 is about the same as a 2.8Ghz p4. But there is little point buying a 3200 as anything down to an athlon xp 2500 will overclock to 3200 speeds but the mobile athlon xp will overclock really well you could performance on par with a 3.0ghz p4 with those.

Even the AMD Durons and the new buget chip from AMD the Samperon have sown the buget market up firmly in AMD favour. High end there is little to choose between the Intel P4 and the AMD 64 chips but the AMD 64 just nips in the bud. Hell almost every chip is better than a celeron.

That is the non mobile XP2500....unfortunately this chip is now "Locked" so it can onlty be overclocked by raising the FSB.
Having said that this should be suffieceint to get to 2200mhz....I think?

    thats 390 euros plus delivery,
add a fast hard drive like this http://www.jes-computer.de/product_info.php?pID=13298 36gb raptor for 105e,
add a case and power supply for another 150, and the heatsink i forgot about for 50 euros, and your hovering around 700euros for a good machine

You'll have to remember that there's *really* not much life left in the socket A Athlon XP series, though - they're not going to make any faster processors for it, so when it comes to upgrading again, you'll be looking at having to get a new motherboard and everything.

But seriously, have you SEEN how cheap Athlon64's are these days? Look: http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10056

Only €155 for an Athlon64 2800!! Surely that's in your price range?

There's not much upgrade potential there either.

If your on a really tight budget your best option is probably the 2400mobile on jes. I got a mate to buy one recently and he has it at 2.4ghz atm from it's stock speed of 1.8. It can go higher. That's about the same as a 3ghz p4 when it comes to games performance for only 85 euro.

If your budget can stretch to it get the a64 by all means.

BOXED - nice retail box which includes a CPU fan & heatsink (must have item, some form of CPU cooling that is...)

OEM - no retail box (comes in small little box enough to protect CPU) and comes with no CPU fan & heatsink (have to buy this seperately).

theres no life left in the 754 boards either, its 755/939 now. I dont think we'll see faster then the 3400+ of 754, they have 3800+ on 939. PCI-E all the way.

the XP's are still best 'bang for buck'

If you have all that I'm guessing maybe you have a case and cd/dvd drives etc aswell. Have a look at the upgrade kits on komplett, for around €350 you can pick up a good p4/Amd64 with a motherboard and memory, you can then pick hard drives, graphic cards etc as needed
