Is there a way to rip a clip out of a dvd without encoding the entire dvd to mpeg/avi and then cutting it?

    Thanks!,

    Simon.

hmm, i know you cn certainly take snap shots using certain dvd playback software, but i would doubt that you can just rip a few minutes of vid&sound. i my be wrong though..anyone?

You could rip the chapter that it's in, using dvd decryptor and then take it from there.
Obviously, you're talking about a kids birthday or a wedding, not any illegal material. ;)

Is the clip a chapter or a track in itself?

If it is, then it should be easy enough to just select that 2 minute clip in DVD Decrypter.

If not it's more complicated. Try one of the guides on Doom9.org maybe.

You might try something called DVDx.....you should rip the chapter to your hard drive using DVD Decrypter and then load that into DVDx where you can make a selection of what you want and select your codecs etc....

You can rip the disc to your HDD, and if you rename the .VOB files to .AVI you can actually edit it as an AVI file.

Same deal with a .DAT to .MPG on a VCD.

As mentioned rip the vob's from which you want to extract the fottage from with DVD Decripter. The using Chopper XP, found at http://www.digital-miner.com/chopperxp.html open the vob and using realtime preview select the section of the vob to extract with mark in and mark out points and save.

From there you can rename the extracted section file (*.vob) to *.mpg and most editing packages will accept this file as a mpeg 2 file from whicjh you can encode it to anything you like.
