Spending could be over for Benitez

Rafael Benitez has admitted his spending days could be over this season - if his new crop of Liverpool players produce the goods.

Liverpool should guarantee themselves a £17m windfall on Tuesday by securing qualification for the Champions League group stage against Graz AK.

Benitez has said he hopes to plough the money back into the squad, having already spent £10.7m on Xabi Alonso, £6m on Luis Garcia and £2m on Josemi, as well as inheriting the £14m Djibril Cisse.

But the Spaniard confessed: "Touch wood, I hope I get some of the money to spend on new players in January if we do qualify but that can wait for now. If the players do well perhaps I won't need to buy anyone.

"We have a good squad now but perhaps in three months we will have injury problems or we are not playing well in one position. But if the players perform well we might not need anyone new."

Here's hoping they do produce the goods. I expect us to organise a contract with Mista on a bosman for next season, and maybe bring in a central defender. A lot of talk at the moment of Kuffour from FC Bayern, would be an excellent addition to the squad, and probably priced pretty reasonably.

Media reporting around the £4m mark. The guy is still only 28.
