    Hi,

I have a DV camcorder with no DV-in and am looking for a second-hand/cheap standalone DV recorder - not the ones with a hard-drive but the ones that record to DV tape.

If anyone has one for sale or knows where to get one cheap, give me a shout.

    Thanks,
    Ardent

I recall seeing a VCR deck that had a hi8/digi8 slot on it... it was in either Peats or Dixons (Jervis street shopping center)... I didn't stop to have a good look at it unfortunately.
You might ask about them in there if you're in the area.

There are also some hardware mods you can do/get to enable DV-in for your camcorder, I wasn't adventurous enough to try the method available for my cam, since it involved dumping the cameras BIOS over a home-made service cable to the PC, hex editing it, then sticking it back on the camera
But depending on your model, there might be easier options available... try googling your camera model and "enable dv in" or something like that, you might come up with some interesting reading.

DV recorders are expensive as hell. The only one i've seen that's even remotely affordable was in Peats and was a VHS/DV player/recorder. I think it retailed around the €1000 mark. I don't recall whether it had a DV in on it though... You're almost better off buying a second camera.

As for trying to activate the DVin through more technical means, i've had bad experiences trying to play around with that kind of stuff on several different types of hardware and the bottom line is that you're playing with fire. Don't even attempt unless you're 100% confident that you can do it.

www.smartdv.co.uk do kits. I personally wouldn't risk it. Personally I went with a DVD Recorder (Nec 2510 Dual-Layer) and what I hope are high quality blank discs which will stand the test of time. I suppose I could hang on to the unedited tapes as uncompressed back up too.

In a perfect world there would be an internal IDE DV-tape drive for PCs which you could use to back-up data too... Remember reading about a project to enable you to record non-video data back to camera - if you had a DV-in camera of course ;-)

dv-out can be changed to dv in. i work in a shop in town and we have them so they are available. they are a bit pricey but if you search the net then im sure you will find a cheaper one. on the dv stand alone recorder, jvc do one but it retails at €1000. that is expensive in real terms but panasonic do one without the combo vhs deck and its €2200! so as dv recorders go it is cheap!
