Sky card with RTE

I'm in Europe, and I'm looking to get RTE via satellite.
I have a large dish for picking up the weak signal,
and have the box, ready to roll.
    I'm just missing the card.
Is there any way I can get RTE without subscribing ?
Would an ex-sub card work for me ?
I have an unactivated UK FTV card, which maybe someone would
    swap if possible.

    TIA,
    Ray

Unfortunately people in this country are stupid enough to pay tv license AND subscription to $ky to get RTÉ in digital, and nobody seems to care.

Hang on a second could someone please clarify, who pays for the satelite transmission cost for RTÉ on Sky?
If it's sky and not the licence payer, then it's the subscriber who gets the benefit and convenience of RTÉ on a sky programme planner and EPG listing in that he/she pays for its transmission there and not the ordinary licence payer.

Try to remember that not all of us live in Ireland.

What a ridiculous comment, do you think that by not paying the sky subscription (which did not increase becuse of RTE's inclusion BTW) that RTE will become suddenly FTA? TV liciense is mandatory if you have a TV.

I'm lucky enough to have a holiday home.

If I bring my tv with me for the weekend, why can't I bring my license too.

Government says I need two licenses for one telly !

the Missus paid them too ):

What is rediculous is the situation where the national broadcaster is not available on digital tv without having to pay subscription.

That true. If you pay the license fee you shouldn't have to pay a further subscription.
BBC had it all under control.

The BBC have the funds to do that RTÉ don't.
This is after all a small country of what 3 or 4 million people.
We don't have an electric rail line from Dublin to Cork,Galway and sligo or the equivalent to the RAF for the same reason.
    It's scale-get over it.

Then write to your local TD and ask why digital terrestrial has not been launched

so who pays for the satellite transponder? A licence fee increase perhaps?

I agree its a little unjust but if they did it on the basis of property ownership all the landlords around the country would get one license for multiple properties.

The UK TV licence fee can be taken with you if you have a caravan/second home (although not across the border obviously)
Yet a UK licence only applies to one dwelling in a muli-occupancy building

So basically youre saying its not possible to provide proper public services in a small country and that If Irish people want same we should vote to ask her majesty to take us back ????????

Well I do believe the BBC have economies of scale on their side yes.
    RTÉ do not.
Considering that much of the infrastrucure in this country was funded by the E.U and given that one of the Net contributers historically to the E.U has been the UK exchequer, then yes a percentage of that funding is ultimately trace able to her majesty's treasury.

That doesn't apply to broadcasting however, but economies of scale and audience size do.

Well the RTE on satellite is an old chestnut of mine. Nearly every country in Europe have their own sat TV, look at poor old Albania they have more than three sat channels.
I think in RTE its down to the will and interest and since they went into bed with $ky I think FTA sat TV from Ireland is way off in the future, such a shame!!! especially with all the people in the UK that would love a TARA type channel!!!

I think it has to be said that RTE are not the most efficient of organisations and that they could make better use of their revenues. An RTE overseas service would definitely pay for itself, I get at least 20 emails a week requesting info on RTE satellite.

Yes Tony I would be happier to send my money directly to Montrose rather than to Murdoch. I loved watching TARA TV!!!
It seems so unfair there is no RTE for expats and fans of Irish broadcasting!!!

You are confusing two basic issues - payment of your TV licence fee and paying for your chosen method of TV delivery. They are unrelated. If you were to follow your logic than NTL and Chorus subscribers should also get their subs free as well.

However, I would agree that the powers that be have dithered on digital TV and have effectively handed digital TV broadcasting on a plate to Sky. We have no policy whatsoever.

Giving exclusive areas for cable franchises played its part too.
