Madrid - tips?

I'm heading off for a city break in Madrid in a couple of weeks and am desperate not to allow it wind up like all my other city breaks, ergo: clubbing and partying to death and seeing nothing of any substance. Aside from what publications like lonely planet can offer me in terms of toursit trap tips, does anyone else know of any curios, must sees or hidden treasure unmissables? I'd seriously appreciate any advice...

I don't really have tips, for some reason I didn't really like the city, there just wasn't a whole lot to do there. One thing I did was take a day trip by train to see Toledo, a nice place and it will get you out of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Unfortunately I am not a local and I cannot offer privileged information, and it all depends on what your interests are, but in any case do try to take that trip to Toledo. I have always wanted to see it, pity last time I was in Madrid my friends were all night clubbing and partying (sounds familiar?) and we missed the morning excursion... Apart from that, I have heard very good reviews of the Thyssen Museum, but perhaps you can find out by tourist guides, as you said, and you might not be that interested in museums... well, apart from culture, food is another thing you shouldn't miss... find a good tapas bar, and try everything in it. With a little more time I can try to come up with a list of places... ;)
