Hi All, started and more or less finished building my first machine Saturday. An interesting experience ;) . However, one major problem plus a few other questions.
Firstly when I power up, everything looks like it's coming on, the motherboard lights up, the cpu fan is working as well as all other fans that are connected etc, but..., when I connect the monitor and switch it on I get the message "no dvi-d signal" . Now as the card I ordered is on backorder, I borrowed an older card of a friend. It's one of the earlier 128 mb geforce cards, the only connections it has are a serial port & a tv-out. The monitor is the 20" Viewsonic, it does however have a serial & usb port, both of which I've tried to no avail. I'm going to try and borrow an older monitor this evening to rule a monitor - graphics card incompatibility out. If I still don't get a signal maybe try the card in another machine. Anyone any suggestions other than what I've thought of why I'm getting this?

The only other problem at the moment is I can't do a soft powerdown, that is turn off the machine from the button on the front of the chassis. I can power up from pressing it, but no matter how long I hold it down I can't power off. Any ideas?

On SATA configuration, can someone clarify if the connecters on the mobo marked SATA1 & SATA2 are basically primary and secondary drives respectively?, I read somewhere that SATA drives don't use jumpers to configure this.

And finally, on the mobo in 2 different locations are connections for pwr fan and chassis fan. Is the one for pwr fan for the cable marked "PSU monitor fan" coming from the psu and the other one for the fan that is the rear exhaust on the case? I went with this arrangement, howver the cable on the rear case fan isn't long enough to reach the fan connection on the mobo for chassis fan, have I mixed up the 2 or do I just need to get a cable extension, can you buy them btw?

Any suggestions or any answers on any on the above appreaciated as always.

    Cheers

    Damo

Is your speaker connected?, are there any beeps? ... some mobo's (most new ones) do not support older 1x AGP boards, check the mobo and graphics card on d'internet and see if they are compatible with each other.....
Does the graphics card need a power connection from the power supply? (usually a small connector like on floppy disk drives)

The graphics cable might possibly be at fault, I have had a dead one before ... make sure its screwed in fully at both ends....and this may sound stupid ... but make sure the card is seated correctly, I have a geforce3 here that isnt warped but wont fit fully into any mobo without some persuasion

It may be an option in the bios (that you cant see) .... and holding down the power button for over 5 seconds should do it usually ...

Depends on the bios / board manufacturer ... boards with SATA and PATA have options that allow SATA first or a mix of them

there should be three of them one for CPU (with sense) one for case (also usually with sense) and one that is pwr (usually no sense for this one) .... case should have the sense because if you arent blowing out hot air the case can get pretty warm in short order ... should be an option to warn you in the bios if this fails (or the cpu fan either) ....

Yeah, forgot to say that, was interesting and enjoyable ;) , just a little frustrating that can't get a display :( .
As to your questions, speaker is connected yeah but no beep. I was thinking at first that I may have connected the speak, pwr & hhd Led wrong but a comment on a different board gave me a different idea. Basically they said that if there is a problem with one on the components it might prevent bios from POSTING, this would also explain why I'm able to use the power switch to turn on the machine but can't turn off with it, maybe I'll take out the graphics card this evening, see if I can get a beep out of the speaker, if so I'll know at least that was causing the problem. Any comments?
