I have just bought a Nikon D70 which is fantastic but...............
I also have a Fuji 6900Z which has a much greater zoom facility.
What lense would beef up the zoom of the Nikon and what price should I expect to pay? and what magnification could I expect?
    Thanks

    Hi Paul,

It really depends what range you want to cover. What do you want to shoot? Architecture, landscape, wildlife, portrait, a mix of everything?

I got a D70 myself when it was released in March. Got the kit lens (18-70), bought a second-hand 70-210, then bought the 24-120 VR as an all-around, travel lens and during my last holiday got a second-hand 80-400 VR. What I am missing now is an ultra wide-angle in the region of 12-24mm.

Also, don't forget to multiply these numbers by 1.5, have a look at the following link for further explanation:
    http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Optical/Focal_Length_Multiplier_01.htm

Effectively, I am covered from 18-400mm at the moment (27-600 when compared to a 35mm camera).

    Regards,

    Michael

PS: I can sell you my 70-210 if you are interested.

    Thanks Michael,

not wishing to be a idiot but...........
My Fuji has 6 x optical and 3 times digital zoom = 18 times
What would I get from a 70-300 at full zoom?
    thanks again

digital zoom means nothing, ignore it. a nikon d70 can get lenses up to about 800x if you want to.

you could get a decent zoom lens for €200 second hand. If you don't know that much about cameras don't bother paying more than that until you learn as you'll just be wasting your money

    look at something like:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3343&item=3834652887&rd=1

or go into a good camera shop and ask advice.

Yep, dotorg is right. Forget about zoom. Make up your mind what you want to shoot and buy glass accordingly. Theat whole zoom-cr@p is just a marketing-schmarketing stunt.

Have a look at the following link:

http://www.bythom.com/nikon.htm (check out the lens section)

http://www.moose395.net/gear/index.html (careful now, he is a pro and buys expensive stuff. I would love that 70-200 VR and 200-400 VR :) )

http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom.html (I quite like this one)

I personally would recommend against the so-called superzoom lenses (28-200, for example). While they cover a wide range they ususally aren't that sharp or fast. Also, forget about the cheapo Nikon 70-300 lenses that some shops try to sell. They don't just feel crap, they are crap.

I could direct you to my for sale post, I have a 70-210 4-5.6 sigma lens (autofocus nikon mount) for sale, 100euro
I have also offered to throw in a skylight filter and some films, but since you have a digital camera the films wont be much good to you, also the d70 has an effective magnification of 1.6 so it would really work out at roughly 112-336.

1.5, not 1.6. Some of the Canon DSLR's are 1.6 I (some Canons are 1.3, some are 1.0). Nikon is 1.5.

Oh okay, I could have sworn otherwise, I was seriously considering one myself, sorry, my mistake, revise figures accordingly.
