    What is bad language?

TV3 got rid of "bitch" and left in "bastard" from At Home with the Braithwates.
TV3 left in "**** (the f word)" in a show after "its good to be...." (don't ask me what i was watching this saturday!!! ) It was 6:30 by the way.
And TG4 removed "****(the s word)" from Everwood on Friday at 6.

But I am just wondering should these words be blanked or beeped out??

So which is worse bitch or bastard?

I was suprised at Braithwaits being on at 8 its not really intended for the little uns. As for swearing it should'nt be cut or bleeped - the programme should go out after 9 pm.

    It is an oxymoron.

No they didn't that was the way it was produced originally for US broadcast.

A question for the philosophy board I think.

America is very prudish when it comes to television, as we see time and time again. The Superbowl halftime tit, being one of many examples.

Indeed, none of the main networks allow bad language at any time day or night.

That's terrible when a scriptwritter cann't come up with a "nice" word for **** and the producers the blank it out, I personnal find that Everwood's "plot/issues" are not really suitable for 6pm on a friday and if you as the producer of the show cuts bad language from a show that tackles such topics should not be "prudish" when it comes to the word **** (thats the s word)(one wonders why boards.ie have a problem with word ****, its not really a bad word like "****" (that is the f word))

Perhaps they should have replaced the word with THIS TASTES LIKE POO OR THIS TASTES LIKE A NUMBER TWO, suppose it doesn't have the dramatic effect as a blaked out ****.

But the father's reply was classic

"Where did you hear a word like that"

    Come on people.

Some would argue that neither of them are 'bad' words.

I actually like when I see these words being used on daytime television without any care. It reminds me of how relaxed we are here and in Britain compared to the US. Yesterday morning, I was watching BBC News and they were discussing beach volleyball at the Olympics, and a guest referred to the media's portrayal of it as "just tits and ass". Imagine that being said on breakfast television in the States, and all the hyper-sensitive morons writing letters in to the station. Give me our attitudes anyday.

I bet the duty officer got some complaints. On UK telly swearing is still a sensitive issue imagine how The Bill would sound if it were true to life or it were made by HBO! Has anyone else noticed the tone of Corrie has got more fruity in the last few weeks?

    Come on what???

The writers/producers are all very well aware of what is and is not allowed on US network TV, the whole thing was done that way intentionally and seing as it was a pre-teen girl that said it I assume it was to make the point that such antiquated rules are stupid.
Everwood is broadcast at 9pm in the US, many American programmes are shown at inappropriately early times here.

I bet they did as well, apparently they get more complaints about bad language than anything else. Mary Whitehouse may be dead but the attitude still lingers on.
They also get complaints from people everytime the news bulletins show images of war or starving children. Apparently it puts them off their dinner, how awful.

Channel 4 are complete bastards for censoring in the mornings, when they used to show friends at 8ish it would be very noticeable how scenes were cut short, words blanked out (usually ass), same goes for scrubs and everybody loves raymond.

Ive found that Irish TV has never been too bad for this, usually because they show shows at decent times, however because of their policy of not touching films they show I do remember hearing the s word on a number of occasions on saturday afternoons.

Do they still have that policy I wonder?

Mike 65 mentioned Duty officers up there at tv stations. Any of you who don't take your telly too seriously could do worse than hop along to www.holymoly.co.uk and sign up for the newsletter there.

everyweek you get the pick of duty log complaints....some absolute corkers in there...eg

Duty Log Bonanza, ITV are snapping at the heels of the Beeb:

    ITV first:

"I am very disappointed as last night, 12th August, I watched Bad Lads Army and one of the sergeants said that Kipriani was standing like a girl guide but the offensive thing is that I am A GIRL GUIDE. Please send me an apology"

London Tonight: "For goodness sake, tell that blonde woman to stop yelling when she is reading the news. She sounds absolutely dreadful and she sits there like a little sex kitten. Get rid of her. She thinks we are all deaf. She is horrible'. 6 callers with similar comments

BBC: General - "I would like to see a programme featuring older people moving into a block of flats and setting up their own little community."

Feels that Sue Barker and Hazel Irvine are poor quality presenters. "They are so bossy and trivial. There is no chemistry between them."

Re. Japanese judo competitors: "I was annoyed that Clare Balding started to laugh after the pronunciation of their names."

I've noticed when watching those kids' Saturday movies at 6.30pm on RTE1 they don't seem to censor anything.
One instance I can remember is watching Jurassic Park where someone says "that's a big pile of s***!". And I don't think the whole idea of dinosaurs eating humans was ideal for that time of the day.

Anyone else been watching 'Arrested Development'? The characters swear in that - as real people do (you wouldn't think so the way a fuss gets kicked up) However, there's always a beep when they swear (clearly put in by the producers themselves).
Isn't it incredibly disturbing that certain words - like the "s-word" - can't be said on U.S. main channels but that, at the same time, you can still show someone being gutted/maimed/slashed? Ehh... priorities?!

I blame those video games tbh.

Well yes video games are responsibile for all murders committed by youths - that much is clear. I guess then all bad language is caused by that heard on TV? I think we can safely say that now :)

Thats what the should call that slot from now on.

I remember RTE used to show reruns of Minder at weekday lunchtime, there used to be loads of tit on display.

That's no way to talk about Dennis Waterman.

Incidentally I see he has sunk to a new low, he is in some sh1tty sky one "celebrity" reality/game crap.

AFAIK there are no set rules here about content like in Britian with the 9pm watershed. If there are then RTE have been ignoring them for years.
Imagine that RTE doing something right all these years, who would have thought.

So I guess shows like the Sopranos & Oz which are liberally peppered with motherf**** & the c-word never appear in the US?

Imagine that RTE doing something right all these years, who would have thought.

As good a time as any then, to 'praise' RTE for their tendancy to either show things as they were intended by shown, than shread them to ribbons.

I refer m'learned friends to the 'melonfarmer'/'motherf**ker' Beverly Hills Cop style thing you'd see on RTE/BBC.
So I guess shows like the Sopranos & Oz which are liberally peppered with motherf**** & the c-word never appear in the US?

See, HBO isn't a 'network' per se. It's AFAIK, a subscription channel dedicated to 'Mature' (as opposed to 'Adult') content. You sign up, you know what you're gonna get...

The original comment about no c***s allowed on main US networks still holds good, although I've heard Simon Cowell appears on American Idol...
