    Hi,

My PC is about two years old and has all I need to run things like DOOM 3. Except a new graphics card. Thing is the AGP slot only goes up to 4x and no-one seems to be selling 4x cards any more. Does anyone know where they can be got?

    Cheers.

Just get a 8x one it will work no problem

Really! Deadley! But my curiosity asks... why call them something different if they work anyway?

    Thanks Bizmark.

I don't know much about GFX cards, but I assume it's because a 8x card will be backwards compatible, and will run at 4x. You'd have to buy a motherboard with an 8x AGP slot to get the full performance out of an 8x card.

Look for 2nd hand geoforce ti 4*00s. most of then are 4xAGP. Usually a few floating around on boards....

It’s just how fast the card transferes data between itself and the pc between 4x and 8x it’s a pretty tiny difference in performance tbh.

Ah! Sweet backwards compatibility - *warms up credit card*

    Thanks everyone.

The 8x cards are backwards compatible so as long as you dont get too high range a card (say get a 9600pro or summit) agp 4x should cause a negligible performance drop.

Theres really no difference between a 4xagp and 8xagp anyway. Most benchmarks show that a 8x agp card running on a 4x agp slot run about 2 frames per second slower. My suggestion would be to get an ATI radeon 9600/9800.

a 9800 pro for about €200 would be about right.

Another 512mb of ram might be an idea also. It's about €100 for either ddr 2700/3200. A nice chunk of ram is all good for games.

Whats your CPU? The more CPU you have the better for doom 3. The min to play doom3 is a 1.5 ghz.

Yea ram is very important also. About a year ago I used to only have 256mb of ram with a 9700 pro and was wondering why unreal 2 was running so slow. Turns out that I couldn't turn up the graphics to full because I didn't have 512mb of ram :(
