really it comes down to the basic question:
are you going to be taking your pc out of your gaff often?
if yes, buy a shuttle. i did.

It's really one you've got to weigh up for your particular situantion.

Having lugged a full tower case and 19" CRT to LAN's the idea of a Shuttle and TFT is very appealing.

    in what way?

graphics, chip and Ram can all be upgraded. if you were buying a new mobo you'd probably be buying all that anyway. don't see the difference really.

It's hardly that simple, it depends on a number of factors:

    - price (Shuttle is probably more expensive)
    - expandability (Standard ATX will be more expandable inside)
    - size/aesthetics (Shuttle will be smaller and look nicer than most ATX IMO)

Depends on your needs. Personally I have a Shuttle because I wanted something small and unobtrusive for a media server for the living room. It's expandable enough for my needs (DVD+-R, 2 internal hard disks, 1 external, PCI TV card). I wouldn't have considered a normal PC to stick in that room. However if it was something to stick under a desk, then it would be a different story.

yeah, i've got a decent graphics card, lots of memory, 2 hard drives, a dvd burner, a tv tuner card, and loads of leds. big enough for an average user, too small for someone with loads of hard drives etc.

[although there's a new shuttle out that hold 3 hard drives.]

Aye, if you're never going to move your PC anywhere, just get a desktop. I got a Shuttle ages ago and it's REALLY handy for taking round to other people's houses, going to LANs, setting up in the living room.

You can still upgrade parts like the cpu, memory, hd, drives, gfx. If you're upgrading to a diff platform (ie from P4 to AMD 64), you'd need to buy a new mobo anyway...

I just got my shuttle there afew days ago.

Like every1 else has said if your going to be carrying it around or if its going in the living room where it will be seen buy the shuttle.

If expandabilty is important get the tower.

However i have to point out to blorg that my shuttle worked out cheaper than a midi tower system with the same spec (apart from motherboard, case and power supply of course).

    Shuttle Rocks

Small portable and near silent looks cool, I brought it over to my familys house and my mother was saying "whats that, a new dvd player" No its my computer. ha-ha I sold here my old atx Pc nearly as much power as shuttle but doesn't sounded like a vaccum cleaner
