I'll preface this with an apology if this is
    a) one of the more idiotic questions seen 'round these parts in ages....
    b) in the wrong place. Mods - do your stuff...

I'm in the market for an iRiver 140. Not only have the locals around here recommended it, but real people in real shops have done as well...

anyway - i can get one on ebay for £220 or from these folks for a few bob more. £30 roughly.

I am not well versed on the whole 110-220 v power supply issue. I'm nearly sure that we use 220 here, but it could be 240. Or is that Britain? (heck, what's 20 v between friends, y'know) At any rate, the crux of the question - am I okay to buy the Ebay one. I note the advert says "AC adapter 100 - 240V, US-UK Plug Adaptor included (US-EU Plug Adaptor also available) "

Is Ireland, to all intents and purposes , counted as UK in matters electrical?

again - apologies for the muppet-esque nature of the query, but I've been hacked off already this year on one iffy em pee three player, i'm not in the mood for happening again....

Pretty much. We officially used to be 220V while they were 240V. Both voltages would allow the use of the same devices without change. These days we've both officially changed to 230V @ 50Hz. You'll still find the odd transformer in the UK that operates at 240V and the variances in the Irish voltage are pretty legendary (anyone who's examined the readout from a voltage monitor on a UPS will testify to that) but basically, yeah.

Amazon have it for the same price as MX2 btw (though they'll probably change the VAT rate from 17.5 to 21 when you hit the purchase page).

As for buying from a US guy on ebay, with one bad experience so far this year with another manufacturer, looking at the warranty should be in order. IANAL and I know sweet FA about warranties but looks like it doesn't have that nasty "buy it in the US and take it to Europe and you're screwed me bucko" clause (I believe that's the technical term for these things). Which is nice.

Thing is though, I notice that the ebay purchase will cost you at least an extra 29.99 for P&P (listed at the bottom of the page) and that's assuming they'll deliver here for the same price as they do to the UK. Which brings the total price to 249.98. MX2 has "Free Post & Packing on all orders within the UK & Republic of Ireland" listed at the bottom of the page making your ebay saving one shiny queen's penny. Under those circumstances I'd do one of two things: buy from MX2 (checking that they have it in stock, page lists "limited stock" till the end of September) and get it delivered to my door or buy it from Amazon and get it delivered to a mate's house in the UK, hence availing of the lower VAT rate and free shipping as it's over 39 quid or whatever they've set that thing at these days. Obviously only if you'll be travelling there and can pick it up. Or just buy it from ebay but check with iriver (contact details here or you could always try the official Irish distributor, CMS Peripherals, based in Kiltimagh of all places (094-937 4000 (I assume they're trade-only though))) that your warranty is good if you buy it from the US and use it here - purely because Apple have screwed people (definitely with ibooks, not too sure about ipods) who've bought in the US and taken the stuff here permanently.

I suppose all you wanted was a simple "yes", yeah?

The I-river charger works from an input of 100-240volts, so it will work with a plug converter in most places around the globe.

I bought my Ipod this time last year in Vancouver (ok so not strictly the US) and brought it home. Stupid design of the remote meant the wiring went faulty from having it sticking up out of the player and crushed under my clothes...anyway to get to the point - Apple Ireland were fine about my warranty. Dunno if I'm just lucky or maybe it was such a minor thing. :D

I got iHP120 in the states a few weeks ago and it works fine here with just a plug converter.

Only had mine a short while but i love it. :D
