They will indeed, and quicker too. Most are 8x single and 2.4X dual. The new ones are 16X single and 4X dual. It think most dual burn +/-R/RW and +R DL.
If you dont understand the above don't worry.
To re-answer your question, yes dual layer burners will burn single layer discs.
Its like DVD burners, they burn burn CD-R's
Hope this was of help to you.

As far as I know the DL Media is still very expensive. Correct me if I'm wrong but you're looking at $10+/€10-€15 each.

SVP.co.uk sell dual-layer discs for less than 15 (just remember to factor in postage aswell, so order with other people if at all possible, helps keep postage costs down):

{DV 3131} Datasafe Ritek **Dual Layer**(2.4x) DVD+R (Awaiting Stock) £6.99 Including VAT (just over 10 euros)

    {DV 3124} Verbatim Datalife Plus **Dual Layer** (2.4x) DVD+R £7.99 Including VAT
    (just under 12 euros)

What dual layer burner did you order mrhappy?

I dunno what yee'd be doing to get so many coasters. I think I've only made one and it was my own fault. Maybe I've just been lucky :)

And yes, I burned a fair few DVD's...

the fastest dual layer burner is 4x, not 8x. And the 4x was only a recent development!

'scuse my ignorance - but are stand-alone DVD players dual layer or is that DVDs have more tracks than DVD-Rs?

Right you are, i was talking out of my arse there. Got mixed up with old specs.

"NEC 3500 16x DVD+/-R writer with 4x Double Layer DVDR writing compatibility and 48x CDR writing compatibility."

I'll edit the above post to stop confusing people.
