    20:30: The Frames

    Curfew at 22:30.

Entirly enjoyable. Except for the bar opening at 6. What idiot thought of that?

Got wrist band into pit, with no help from the officials there. Nice surprise from Damo Rice. Emmm...nanars.

Entirly enjoyable indeed. Best Frames gig in a very long time...

  • apparently as has been said on the frames messageboard, Damien Rice was in the pit for the gig!!!

was actually the best gig i've ever been to, (not hard i'm 15) but it wont be beaten in a long while. Supergrass were distinctly average though, could do nothing to get the crowd going.

The Frames could do nothing wrong, when a 'technical error' occured at the start of Rent Day Blues it just added to the whole song. Atmosphere was electric.

It was an amazing day, to all you fans who missed it, i enjoyed it for you.

Fantastic Gig, Supergrass were very good (3rd time in two years seeing a band I only kinda like ) and despite the sound engineers best attempts to sabotage the performance I really enjoyed Bell X1. No idea why Idlewild were 3rd billed though.

The Frames were brilliant, but there was never really gonna be any doubt about that. The really need to get over the whole humility thing. I just don't see what else there is for them here if they don't go international. I mean what other Irish band bar U2 can command a crowd of about 20 thousand with such ease? When you think about it, how bands like The Darkness are headlining Reading over The Frames, form a music point of view, is unfathomable.

In any case, MAJOR gripe, the organisation was appalling. There were inadequate food outlets, 45 minute queing for a burger? Come on!

As for the the bar, what idiot planned a 6-10 bar opening. Rather than control the drinking it just lead to alot of people binging a smuch as they could get in the short 4 hour period instead of drinking slowly over the day. Stupidity.
Still, it didn't even rain :)

I thought it was a brilliant gig too - apart from poor ol' halite, tho. I kinda felt sorry for them when Glen was thanking the bands at the end of the night - "I'd like to thank Halite (silence), Belle X-1 (cheer), Idlewild (cheer)..." etc. They were quite crap tho.
I agree that Supergrass weren't great. I was really disappointed with them, actually, I really like them but they were a bit dead & looked kinda bored... maybe it was just a bad day for them! Idlewild were great, even tho the crowd stubbornly refused to show any excitement (apart from a 6-man moshpit, lol). Gotta get me some of their stuff.
The Frames, unsurprisingly, stole the show & everyone suitably went nuts for them. Here's a couple of photos I took of them last night to remember the gig by...

In fairness to Supergrass the came on within an hour of the bar opening, so the crowd was a bit listless....

Been to see the frames a good few times over the years tho never outdoors and was afraid might lose some of their trademark atmosphere, but no it was amazing. Sound was a bit crap for Bellx1 but was impressed by Supergrass, the crowd seemed a bit disinterested apart from a couple of obvious songs.

Really, really enjoyed this. Decent weather, great atmosphere, but only for the frames, very subdued other than that. I think the late bar opening was a good idea, a distinct lack of teenagers in oblivion, falling around puking on themselves. However, its easy for me to say that as i cant drink heino, filthy stuff.

Did Damien Rice join them on stage is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

Yea. Glen started singing Blowers Daughter and about 2 lines into the song Damo came out and took over and Glen went off. Then at the end of the song he started playing Creep by Radiohead, then went back into the Blowers Daughter.

twas a nice touch to be sure. What about the rapper though? A bit lame IMO.

i thought Berny "the rapper" was great. He's well known on their messageboard.

Brilliant day - I love moaning and haven't had a good one in ages. Not enough food vendors, so massive queues for that. Not enough beer stalls, so big (but annoyingly efficient) queues for that. The Beer didn't go onsale til six in the evening which was great, meant I got good value out of my hangover from the night before and was left with little drinking time before getting a position to watch last two acts - amazing idea. There was queues for the toilets also which was rather nice.

The only real spoiler on the day was that the Frames were rather good :D

The whole 'berny rapping at frames gigs' thing is getting a bit old to be honest.

Enjoyed the rest of it though apart from the queue for food. Missed Bell X1, really enjoyed Idlewild, Supergrass may as well have queued up for food with me - that's how interested they looked. Pity 'cause I was really looking forward to them!

The crowd didnt seem too interested in any of the bands apart from the frames and bell x1 which is a pity cos i think idlewild and supergrass were decent enough, bell x1 were class, definatly hope to see alot more of them!

Frames were class, they work the crowd brilliantly and put on a great show, love the way they do pixies covers, where is my mind was great to hear.

    Absoutely brill day.
BellX1 and Frames the highlights. BellX1 the new U2? (Except Paul Noonan can really sing and he is HOT!). They are playing Vicar St on 2 October, will be there.

Frames fantastic of course. Re them making it internationally, think they could do it but don't know if they want to. Heard Glenn on Ian Dempsey on the Friday saying that people shouldn't be concerned about the fact they are around 14 years or whatever, it was the journey that counts (man).

    thanks :)
here's a couple i got of idlewild. the frames ones came out better because of the lighting they were using & the fact it was dark when they came on, but seeing as you asked for idlewild here you go. sure i'll put up a couple of belle x-1 while i'm at it...
