CD Writing Prob....

    Lads,

Any help would be appreciated with this. Every couple of times i try to burn to cd it just comes up "BURN FAILURE" after about 7% and i notice the buffer is going up and down during the times it does work. I'd say about every 1 in 4 attempts to burn fails. I'm using the new Nero 6 Ultra Edition, and i've included the error log below....

after it fails, i restart my computer and sometimes it works again. the only way of me making sure it works is to simulate and then burn, which takes ages!!

Any help would be brilliant lads!! this has been annoying me for ages!! but no more suffering in silence!!

    Cheers,

    Vinny

In my experience CD writers going funny can sometimes be fixed by upgrading the firmware. If you're on the latest firmware then reapply it.

Are you running any other apps when you’re trying to burn the CD.? Usually when the buffer runs low another app is loading or some other processing needs to be done. May you could go to the task manager and see what processes are running there. Also it the file your writing is large it might be fragmented hence takes longer to read and this would also cause the buffer to run low (depends how good the buffer under run protection is).

What are your PC SPECS ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 384 ✭✭mrhappy42

    1) Incorrect DMA settings
    2) Read speed and/or digital audio extraction capabilities of other CD-ROM reader.
    3) Trying to record directly from MP3 to audio disc using a slower computer.
    4) Problems with background tasks
    5) Buffer underrun protection has been turned off
    6) Faulty recorder

You have 83% of CPU in use which sounds high. Dont see any buffer protection on. All data on the CD but error in final run in a file called mmc.cpp which my guess is a memory manager controler (big guess here).

Ps...taste in music might be the issue :-)

    grrrreat!

You could try dropping your burning speed and see if the reliability improves above 75%.

Have you tried turning DMA on for the dvd drive? It should support it.

Have you tried a different brand of disks?

Could you swap burners with a mate to see if it is the pc or the burner causing the problem?

not the brand anyway, is deffo the writer

Right, I did a little digging on the subject, and here's what I've found:

    1) You can get firmware for that drive here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=286

Remember, however, that this is an unofficial site offering region-free firmware for DVD-ROM drives. The long list of revisions (1012, 1030B, 1030M, 1032 / 1A18) are the standard RPC-2 (as in non-hacked) firmware versions, which you should definitely try first.

    2) That drive is a little on the old side (8x8x32x with CD media, 8x DVD read) - it may just be at the end of its life.

    3) However, a review I dug up on this drive suggesed that the reviewer had difficulty getting it to run in DMA mode (which may go a long way to explaining your massive CPU usage) - http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=71 - which also suggests that the drive is at least three years old.

If you've got PowerDVD installed (it may well have come with the drive) the Diagnostic tool that comes with it can usually enable DMA for the drive if it's not enabled with minimal fuss (but requiring a restart).

This page (http://www.feurio.com/English/Writerdb/Data/d_toshiba_sd_r1102.shtml) suggests that your drive does in fact support a Burn-Proof-type technology - check that Nero is aware of this and that it's switched on.

    Hope this helps,

    thanks inspector gadget man!

i try to enable it in power dvd, restart my pc, and the box is unchecked again!!! GRRR!

can i remove the drive for my device manager (secondary IDE) and then it will become DMA enabled (i read this somewhere else?)??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Inspector Gadget

Well, the normal route to enabling DMA is to go to the Device Manager, pull up the appropriate IDE controller's properties, and enable DMA for the appropriate devices (master and slave). TBH I'm not really sure if removing the device will help, unless it automatically discovers the correct settings for the drive after you reboot. Can't hurt, though...

Have you shuffled devices around on your IDE controllers (i.e. have you added any new drives or moved drives from master to slave (or vice versa) or between controllers? It may be important...

The PowerDVD diagnostic tool doesn't always work, but seeing as the review I linked to above mentioned that it was included with your drive, I thought it was worth a shot...

yea cheers for your help, i left some reputation things for ye, i was looking for a reason to use em' ;)

i havnt shuffled anything around, thats why i'm baffled. it just stops writing the odd time!

Ta for the points... am still getting my head around some of the new vB3 features, but I'm guessing that's a good thing :p

Getting back on topic, even Burn-Proof drives choke occasionally, if they're left waiting too long - probably due that the drive's not absolutely dead accurate (it's awfully close though) in tracking the rotational position of the CD and the error is growing slightly with each revolution. Did you have a look at Nero's read of your recorder (the exact menu option that will give you this varies with the version of Nero you've got, but I'm sure you'll be able to find it) to see if it realises that it's got a burn-proof-type technology in it? That may be very important...

man i'm keeping you up late gadget!!

my main worry is getting the DMA on...

    heres the nero report:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,393 ✭✭✭Inspector Gadget

Last one for tonight (I'm off home):

Two thing I've noticed; first, Nero doesn't think you've got Burn-Proof; second, your drive is on the Secondary SLAVE channel - this may be why the DMA isn't engaging. Set the jumper in the back of the burner to MASTER (and, ideally, connect the drive to the centre connector on the IDE cable - I'm assuming it's a 40-conductor cable you've got here. If it's an 80-pin cable, the Master plug is at the end of the cable. 40-pin IDE ribbon cables have the same individual conductor thickness as floppy drive cables; 80-pin versions are much finer). You may find that DMA will engage after that.

    Hope it works for you...

Still think its the amount of software your running..any of those drivers could be kicking in to do something. Especially if you did not change any of the above.
