Bad experience with Sky

    Hi
I ordered Sky + in July and I was charged €299.00 for it on the 27th of July. I was given a date for installation by Sky of the 13th of August. I took the day off work. The engineer rang me that morning to say he would be with me between 12.00 and 3.00pm. He never showed up and I got a call from Sky customer service around 3.30 to say he had to cancel the installation as his van broke down. They re-arranged the installation for yesterday (18th of August). Again I took the day off work. The engineer was supposed to call between 4.00 and 6.00pm. There was no sign of him by 5.15 so I called Sky customer service. They informed that the engineer had just cancelled as he did not have enough time to do it. They had to re-arrange a new date for me and the best date they could give me was Thursday the 2nd of September or the first Saturday available was the 18th of September.

Needless to say I am not a happy camper. I paid for this back in July and have still not got Sky + and now won’t have it until September. Also I have lost 2 days work through no fault of my own.

Did anyone else have bad experiences like this? It is so frustrating and I feel like cancelling Sky + now before I even get it!! :(

A work colleague of mine ordered Sky+ last May. Same as you, he stayed at home to be there for the installer. I forget what the speel was but he never showed anyway. When he rang Sky he was given another appointment date about three weeks later. Needlesstosay he lost it. Gave out like hell on the phone and guess what? .....it worked. He had Sky+ installed a couple of days later.

You should of gone to a local agent, a lot less hassle you would of had. It might of cost you a little bit extra, but shrrr isnt it worth it after the day's you have missed from work relying on the installer????

    Agreed one hundred percent.
You gets what you pays for and the moral of the story is,pay a little extra to the local guy and you know he will be there on the day.
Heard to many stories of people losing days at work and no shows for the cheapo sky instalations at this stage!

Does anyone know how much a local installer would roughly charge to do the job? I'm also having my current box moved upstairs.
    Thanks

But thats the thing the local guy will probably charge the same unless its a sky only promotion.

Seeing as you have sky all ready a local will charge you 299 for the Sky Plus box, 100 to install it & 75 to relocate the standard digibox upstair's. This seems to be the norm with them all whom I have spoken to although other's may differ. I dont think they will be able to offer you any sort of a promotion seeing as you have Sky all ready, but at least you know its a guy whom depends on you for his bread & butter and will show up, and not an installer whom is bombarded with work because of all the sky advertising and does'nt care about whom gets installed or not. Well thats my thinking on it anyway!

Thanks Bigpaddy. With Sky it only cost me 299 in total as installation and re-location of the other box was free with offer I availed of.

Except, of course, that you have not received what you did not pay for.

Tony (Satellite.ie) did my Sky+ installation/reloacation and provided an excellent (and punctual) service.

Update - I sent a rather snotty email to Sky yesterday detailing my bad experience and annoyance. They emailed me back today apologising and they have re-arranged my installation for this Tuesday the 24th and added a credit of €29 to my account as a goodwill gesture. The guy who emailed me said he would personally chase up on this to ensure the installation is done ok on Tuesday. So I am a relatively happy bunny again!
I will let you all know next week if everything runs smoothly!!

Update - You won't believe it but the installer rang me at 6.30 yesterday evening to cancel again. This time the excuse was they had no stock of Sky + boxes left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I already had today booked off work.
This is the 3rd cancellation. Needless to say I was seriously angry. So I got onto the guy in Sky you guaranteed me I would have it today and said I wanted to cancel Sky + and get a full refund plus compensation for lost work.
He came back quickly to say he would sort it out and I would have it today. My installation is being done by Finlays. They just rang to say they would be in fact with me this afternoon and they said they had to buy some stock from some installer in Naas to do my job as their stock is not arriving until tonight.
I will confirm tomorrow if all goes well

I really hate it when people come out with crap like that, it is as if they are bending over backwards to do you a big favour by doing the job they are being paid for.

We suffered the same problem with our Sky install, firstly the cards never arrived so we had to cancel the install date, then I took two separate days off work and the sky installer never came! We were given pityful excuses not even worth repeating! When they did arrive the installer told me that they don't particularly like doing a multi room install as they only get paid for one of the installations and it takes twice the time to do a multi room installation!

We eventually got it installed so......happy days!

I got Sky + at last!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4th time lucky
They arrived at 5.30 yesterday evening. They charged me €30 to move the box upstairs as there wasn't a phone line upstairs and they had to run one up.
They told me the same thing that installers hate doing the multiroom installs as they take much longer etc
Anyway I told Sky today that everything was sorted out and they gave me €30 credit to my account for all the hassle.

So Rizzo, looking over your whole experience and the credits etc you got from sky what do you reckon the "real" cost of getting sky+ actually was taking into account the days off etc ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭Rizzo the Rat

well the days off did not cost me anything because I am lucky in where I work I can just take a day or half day off if I need it. But obviously I did not tell Sky that and made a big deal of "days lost from work".
But overall I have learned my lesson and I would now advise anyone thinking of getting Sky + to use a local installer rather than Sky. It may cost you a little more but it is well worth it considering the time wasting, stress and frustration of dealing with Sky direct.
