I know some medical expenses can be claimed against tax on the paye system at the end of the year. However, i just wondered whether receipts for medical expenses incurred

    a) Outside Ireland but within the EU
    b) Outside the EU

    are acceptable???

I'd assume its only valid for bills within Ireland. Assuming thats your primary residence and where you pay tax in the first place.

I know this is not exactly what you asked but anyone travelling within the EU should have an E109 and then most of there medical expenses would be free.

The revenue site has a form MED1 which you use to claim back after the current tax year. I have claimed back small amounts incurred whilst on holidays. As long as you have the receipts you should be garnd - the form details what is/isn't allowed...you'll need to send in your P60 as well..

When you say you were on holidays and claimed back Parsi, was that within the EU?
I checked out revenue.ie and whilst there are restrictions on the type of medical expenses that one can claim against, theres no mention of location.

I will probably give them a call.

Yip - it was a doctor in France - I think the main things are : that the expenses are in the eligible categories and that you didn't claim for them anywhere else (though you can claim the non-refunded part "the excess" that the VHI didn't pay eg bill is eur1234, vhi have excess of 34 and then pay half [600] - you can claim the 34 + the 600 that the VHI didn't pay - the idea is not to make a profit... basiclaly tot up the expenses, deduct the refunds from VHI , Hospital Staurday Fund (great if you have kids!!), BUPA etc, then dedcut the Revenues excess and that's how much you claim..just make sure you can back it all up
