another question about my 9800xt...

ok after all the fuss i went through with my last Asus 9800xt ..well thats gone back to overclockers and they will only send me another Asus..if this one plays up as well i dont see what else i can do, so im gonna wait till it comes and see if this 1 wants to overclock or give me artifacts again

my question is...the heatsink is rather.scary on this card and i dont think im brave enough to take it off but do these Ati Silencer 3's fit i havent got either a normal 9800xt to hand or my asus one so i dont know if the card sizes are any bigger or if the core on the Asus one is in the wrong place

if the core is in the right place and it seems to fit..does anyone have a guide to getting this heatsink off..id rather not play around with it but if i can get the silencer i will be quite happy to have a go and getting the heatsink off..but i dont know wot im doing

i just want it cool! and to be overclockable i know the card itself is pretty damn good but i just wanna squeeze a bit more out of it without paying another £350 for an x800 this does me fine i just wanna future proof it a bit..and hey if its quieter with this on..all the better! :D

(ive read loads of sites saying it supports 9800xt..but i cant find 1 that says it DOESNT support the Asus one)

    so ..does it?

    thx

If it supports the 9800xt it should support them all. Believe having seen other cards the cooler on it is not that scary.

It should be easy to take off, there are probably just some screws holding it in place.

All the 9800xt board layouts are the same so the cooler should fit them all.

    yes!!!

ok well ive never really..done anything like that before i mean building a pc ..yeh but i just dont wanna pull it off and crack summat ...then overclockers wont take it back

is there a certain way to fit these ati silencers..do you get instructions with the box or what coz ive read about scraping the paste off the core and applying some new..is that gotta be done..and if so is it done the same way as a cpu ...ive never actually seen a gpu

thx again..and it is scary if the only other card you have owned is a 9200se and a gf4 mx440 :D ...oh and the 9600..but none of them seem as bad to me..dunno if the new nvidias are ..nasty..but quite frankly i dont care i could have a cool 9800xt wooo :D

You should get instructions with the silencer. If not they will be on the company's site.

Here's a pic of the card with the sink removed revealing the core and ram chips.

You will need to remove the old paste. I'd advise artic silver 5 for your new paste for best performance. You will also need to get 8 copper ram sinks for the ram and use artic silver on these as well. Only use tiny amounts of the artic silver. Just enough for an almost transparent layer over the surface.

    It's an easy enough job.

..didnt i read something about artic silver...and you had to be careful coz it was a conductor or something..i dont remember id just rather not **** the card up

still thx for the pic and info ill have to get to it when they send me another card back....when do they come out in england anyway these ATi silencers 3's ive only seen them on french sites

There is no problem with artic silver providing your not a complete retard when applying it. You would have to put loads of it on so it's going over the edges of the chip and onto the mobo for it to cause any problems with possibly bridging connections.

It's easy to apply. Just use a tiny amount. It can help drop your temps by 5-8c compared to silicone based pastes. AS5 is 70% silver.

You can get the new Ati silencers on jes-computer.de who ship to ireland.

Will the AS5 stick the ram sinks? Thought thermal adhiesive is what you need for them (ie so they dont fall off :))?

I think you can put (super) glue around the edges of the memory after applying the thermal paste like here http://overclockers.com/tips1170/

Exactly billy, as5 is the best for heat transfer and you keep them in place by using a tiny amount of super glue at the edges, not all the way around. Just enough to keep them on but not too much so you can never take them back off.

As5 will help stick it as well.

just looking at a pic of the ATi silencer 3

where the hell are the ram sinks gonna go..its covers most the card

i thought these new coolers was designed so they already covered the ram...

i wanted a quick cheap solution not glueing bits all over my card..ill only **** up if i did

oh and i cant even read jes ..i can only read the english bits :p but ireland is no good to me i live in england :(

    edit - just checked : http://www.scythe-usa.com/

and found em..the little chart at the bottom says:

    memory cooler - Y

so i dont need ram sinks then...? coz taking this heatsink off is gonna crap me up enough incase i slip and cause damage..glueing stuff is getting way over my head

They deliver to england as well but anyway, where ever you can get them it should be fine. I didn't know it covered the ram chips as well, the artic one doesn't but looks like it does. There is actually a gap underneath that allows you to put them in place. I'm not familiar with the ati one so I wouldn't know.

There are 4 ram chips on the back as well though. Does it cover does as well?

it has some sort of plate that goes over the back i read..which is for the back ones
..im just wondering my asus one has a plate on the back too..i dont know if its attached to the heatsink or if its on its own..i really need it back to see

you cant have ..2 plates can you  ..this is gonna be a damn messing around i can tell..but they really sound worth it....should rock..if i dont screw up..ill try this jes again..can i pay with an english credit card or whatever because ive never bought anything from a different country..and what are the shipping costs gonna be like?

its here too btw http://pcmoddingmy.com/content.php?review.81..when u get past the nvidia ones :p

You have to pay using bank transfer or payapl. There have been plenty of posts on it in the past if you do a quick search.

Shipping costs aren't much but your better off getting a few items together to make it worth your while.

I've got a good bit of stuff off them and anything that had instructtions was usually multi-language. You will find any instructions you need online anyway.
