    hi folks,

i have been offered a place into yr 3 of the electrical and electronic eng degree in ucc. i am wondering if there is a module on asic design in this course?
i also have been looking into the micro electronic degree, (which i also applied for as 2nd choice). does anyone have any feedback on these courses?

the micro electronic degree looks very useful in terms of work, also there would be less students doing this and the atmosphere would be maybe better and more student oriented? anyone doing this course?

its either one of these courses or a BSc in electronic systems in LIT.

im in a mess as to where to go......

Ok i can help you out as much as i can :) The 3rd year modules are

    Analogue Integrated Circuits
    Analogue and Digital Signal Processing
    Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits
    Control Engineering
    Electrical Machines and Power Electronics
    Mechanical Engineering
    Electromagnetic Field Theory

Then in fourth year you do 8 from the following list.

    Telecommunications
    Power Electronics
    Microelectronics
    Digital IC Design
    Optical Electronics
    Digital Signal Processing
    Control Engineering
    Microwave Electronics
    Mechatronics & Industrial Automation
    Electrical/Electronic Power Supply Systems
    Production Management
    Production Engineering

There were eight people in the microelectronic engineering degree this year, and last year majority of there classes were in the NMRC and afaik most of there 3rd year classes were aswell so you wouldn't be in with the straight electrical people at all. Regarding atmosphere only 51 people sat the 2nd year electrical exams aswell so it's a pretty small class as it is and the lecturers don't object(they even welcome) questions. All the lecturers i had this year were very approachable outside of lectures if you had a problem. Regarding the LIT course i can't say i know anyone doing it but I've been told by a few people that U.C.C. is the place to go for electronics aswell and going by some of the companies that give us work experience that seems to be fairly true.

Hope i've been of help to you

    hi molly,

cheers for that, whats your line of study there?
    @ !

is there any programming in year 3 or 4.?

micro electronic engineering i havent been offered, but i should possibly get into year 3 if i got onto the admissions. (i had it 2nd choice).

    as for LIT,
    here are the modules there,

    statistical methods
    oo programming
    management bstudies 1
    contemporary logic design
    dsp
    project

    data analysis
    windows programming
    management studies 2
    embedded systems 1
    embedded ststems 2

    electives

Most of the third year programming is done using assembly and mathematika if i recall correctly. I should be starting third year in september, doing electrical and electronic. I've already done some of that LIT stuff, such as object orientated programming, Digital Communications and Statistic stuff, and majority of the other stuff is done in third and fourth year if you want to do it.

mmmm ,not sure about programming with maths..!

do u know anyone doing micro electronics? thats a pretty new course isnt it? any feedback on it?

limerick is nearer to me, but in terms of work and stuff, ucc sounds better

My brother is just about to go in to 4th year micro-electronic engineering in UCC. Lucky for you he is also a member of this boards! Daveirl is his nick so you can PM him or I will try and get him to come to this thread. Him and the other 3rd years are on Work Placement at the moment. As far as I know there are only 6 in his year.

A close friend of mine just completed 1st year Micro-Elec eng in UCC and is about to go in to second year. There are 8 in his year but its expected for that to drop lower going in to second year. Alas he is not a member of boards. I think that up until like Christmas they did basically the same material as the Elec Eng students and then it started to diversify.

I hope to do it next year once I do the Leaving Cert. The points are easy-peasy but its a tough course or so I hear often. Good thing theres money to be made from it! :)

    hi mate

thats sound, tell him get on here and tell me about it! i will either do that or the electronic engineering degree

i have 2 diplomas already done, a city and guilds 271 and a hetac in electronic and computer engineering. i will get into the third year......which is darn hard!

I don't think you'd be doing microelectronic in ucc anymore as they're scrapping the degree after this year as far as i know after this year. What you'll have to do is do first year electrical&electronic and then into micro if you wish(well this is what they used to do, i dunno are they going to redo this)

Mathematika is supposed to be pretty easy to use aswell.

    Hi there

I'm a postgrad in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering here in UCC, but I'm actually a Physics graduate, so I really can't comment on the course modules as I've never taken any.

However, I've been working in the department for the last four years, and I'm incredibly impressed by the degrees offered here in this dept. The lecturers are in general a great group of people who are always available to answer questions for their students. The microelec course is going to be dropped from the CAO and entry will pass back to the general elec eng degree from 2005 onwards. However, you can still have the option of spcialising in microelec.

Third year is hard going. You only have to see the faces of the thrid years as they sit their exams before everybody else to realise that. However, industry around Cork and in Ireland in general recognises the worth of the UCC degree. That's why many RF companies have research bases here in Cork.

Let's hope to see you here in UCC.

Yeah, exactly like how it was. Apparently there wasn't enough interest/difference to warrant it being a seperate degree in first year.

that's definitely the case. It was asking people to specialise far too soon. I took groups of teenage girls around UCC over 2 days visiting all the science and engineering departments. From feedback from the girls, I realised that they could relate to or understand all courses except microelec. It was too specialised to choose as a CAO option. Kennedy's presentations got the worst reception from them out of all the talks they attended.

Sniffle, and there I am highly interested in doing the engineering courses already mentioned and I don't get a tour!
Discrimination against boys I tells ya! Where is our Boys Science day?

Dudara, I demand that you create a Boys Science day liek you give the girls or at least let us join in. You wouldn't want the faculty to be seens as sexist now would you? :)

On a side note, it really does annoy me!!

Oh, it really annoys me too, and I'm a woman. They insist on showing these twits of girls around the science and engineering departments and only 20% of them have any interest. It's a waste of time and resources. The should concentrate on getting the people who want to do science and engineering, regardless of sex.

D-generate, come visit the elec eng on the UCC open day at the start of October. I'll arrange a good tour for you. In fact, this is an open invitation to anyone on the boards thinking of doing engineering..

Cheers, I will definitely be going to that this year even though I already have my course basically picked.

But the micro-elec eng department is over on north mall isn't it? How do tehy give tours of that or is all the equipment in the big ugly building on the Main Campus. I forget the name of it but its the science building. An ugly behemoth it is!

    hi there,

thanks for the tips, im inclined to branch into the booming microelectronics industry!

i am interested in power supplys, could i do this module in year 4 even though its only specific to eee?

what is the work placement like with analog? is the money good, i heard work placement money is crap, but again, what with most companys hoping to keep the grads they would pay them well.?

as mentioned it will be year 3, what with my two existing diplomas and about 4 yrs work experience. in my hetac diploma just done this is the material i covered.

micro systems: intel, motorola, 16/32 bit processors, mpu architecture

software eng/programming : assembly, oo programming and methodolgies

telecomms and networks : digital telephony, modulation techniques, digital transmission, noise, transmission lines, networks, digital communications

ee & dsp : dsp, digital electronics

maths: laplace, fourier, integration, linear algebra, differential equations

project: made a 8052 based micro and hitachi lcd module, powered by a solar panel and ni-mh batterys, was mean to get the time and date to the lcd, via some assembly code.........needless to say it didnt!

i got a merit 2, software and java bogged me way down, just got 40% in them

D-generate, I'm not sure how microelec do tours on the open day. They are based down on the North Mall in the Irish Distillery grounds, across the river from the NMRC.

The elec eng building is the one on your left as you come in the main car entrance off college road. The really ugly building right next door to it is the Science building (or Robert Kane Building in these days of American philantropy)

wait till u graduate, then ur wages might increase tenfold..........!

but its not all about money, i just want a decent job where you would look forward to work rather than going around sheepishly every day.

im inclined to do the micro course, theres some rf work as well in it? id like to get into blue tooth and technologies like that.

what are you doing for your project do you think?

    chow
