Hi All, I was looking at this offer on Komplett http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=115294&cks=FRO

but this got me thinking about the minimum recommended PSU specs for these 64bit chips. I've currently got a 350W PSU...

What are people using in their 64bit machines?

not being a PSU expert or having an AMD64 system i couldnt honestly tell you :D

but it depends on your psu a good quality one like antec should easily power a 64 bit system even a 350watt one..however it depends what vid card you got in there as well they use quite a lot of power

but taking a wild stab in the dark, if your 350watt psu is a good model and you dont have 4 hdd's 2 dvd rw's etc etc etc...you should be good with it

..its all good as long as its not Q-tec  then you will prob struggle with a 550

Depends some of the newer graphics cards are takign some extra juice not alot. With the rig I have I would not go lower than 450w just to be on the safe side.

    Fortron

yeah its really the brand name rather then the actual psu in a way...

i believe fortron underrate the power output for some reason whereas q-tec
    overrate theirs

if you have a 9800xt ir recommends a 400w i think but with a 6800 you need something bigger still, to be safe

IMO an antec 400w should do it but really depends on your gfx

    that looks pretty sweet

it would be more than enough to power a amd 64 system and the added bonus of been able to control the wires of your psu is cool.

i might sell my trueblue480w for one of these. www.elara.ie have them on their site

    Fortron

TBH A fortron 300w would probably be enough unless your getting a GFX card like an X800 or 6800? To be safe a 350w-400w Fortron would do the job and allow for overclocking.

Fortrons way under rate there power, so a 350w could produce the same ammount as a 420w Antec (sometime more).

BTW the 120mm fan Fortrons are the ones im talkin about (although im sure the others are pretty simular).

Depending on your brand of PSU and what GFX card your getting the one you have might be ok either.

Have a look here for more info on PSU's ...... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152842

Ideally you don't want your psu running over 70% of it's capacity for extended periods of time. This is what kills them.

So say your g-card uses 100w, your processor 100w, mobo 20w, dvd drive 10w, fans sound card ect 50w max.

So it will use about 300w at max load so you would want a 350w or 400w to keep it running near 70%.

Those percentages aren't exact figures but they are close to the real ones.

I'm using a 420 with lots of power hungry units inside. Does the job fine.
